Udupi: Three Accused in Manipal Gang Rape Case Get Life Imprisonment

Udupi: The district sessions court has given life imprisonment to all the three accused in the Manipal Medical college student gang rape case, here on October 15.

A MBBS student was abducted in an auto-rickshaw by three persons to a remote area and was gang raped. The Manipal police arrested the prime accused Yogish, Hariprasad and Anand, they were facing charges under section IPC 366, 376D, 506 r/w 34 and 201. The police also arrested other two accused Harindra and Balachandra for allegedly tampering scientific evidences.

In this case a charge sheet was registered in August 2013 and the trail began from January 2014. The Chief Judicial Magistrate had transferred the case to the District Sessions Court.

On 15 October 2015, the District Sessions Court Judge Shivshanker Ammarannavar sentenced the three accused to life imprisonment under IPC 376(D) and a fine of Rs 1 lakh. Also under IPC 366, 10 years prison and a fine of Rs 5000 and under IPC 506 7 years prison and a fine of Rs 5000.

The other two accused Harindra and Balachandra for allegedly tampering scientific evidences, the district court sentenced them 3 years prison and a fine of Rs 5000.
