Veteran cardiologist Dr A V Shetty Passes Away

Mangaluru: Veteran cardiologist Dr. Anand Veeranna Shetty (85) passed away at his residence late this evening. He was a resident of ‘The Pacific’ at Kadri Kambla Cross Road in the city. He is survived by his wife Chandra, two daughters and a son. All his children are doctors.

One of his daughters Dr. Saritha Paul is a neonatologist at Father Muller Medical College Hospital. Dr. Paul Varghese, Consultant Cardiologist of the city, is his son in law. His other two children are settled abroad.

Hailing from Kundapur, Dr. A. V. Shetty, as he was popularly known, was a pioneer physician and acknowledged as the first cardiologist of the district. He was a recipient of ‘Prince of Wales’ Gold Medal from Mumbai University. The first open heart surgery in entire Karnataka state, which took place at Government Wenlock Hospital, Mangalore, was performed under his watch.

He studied at the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh in 1962. He completed MRCP degree in 1963 and acquired FRCP degree in 1974. He served as Professor of Cardiology at Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore for 25 years and after retirement served as Chief of Cardiology at Father Muller Hospital, Mangalore. He also had a busy consultation practice at Temple Square in Car Street, Mangalore.

Dr. A. V. Shetty was one of the oldest serving members of Rotary Club of Mangalore and had also been its President. He was a member of Freemasons and has served as Honorary Secretary of Mangalore Club.

He has served as President of Indian Medical Association Mangaluru Branch. He was the President of Association of Physicians of India, DK Chapter during 1992–1993.

He was a founder trustee of Sri Gopalakrishna Temple, Shakthinagar and an advisor to Shakthi Education Trust. K. C. Naik, Managing Trustee of Sri Gopalakrishna Temple, Shakthinagar has condoled the demise of Dr. A. V. Shetty.
