Mangaluru: For a while parents were worried about their kids getting hooked on the “Blue Whale”, also known as Blue Whale Challenge, a social network phenomenon dating from 2016 that claimed to exist in several countries. It was a “game” reportedly consisting of a series of tasks assigned to players by administrators over a 50-day period, initially innocuous before introducing elements of self-harm and the final challenge requiring the player to commit suicide. Following close on its heels, now storming worldwide is yet another trend named “Kiki Challenge”, which has become a target to the netizens worldwide, including India, and cops in Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, also recently Mysuru have given strict warning not to indulge in this Kiki Challenge.

What is Kiki challenge?: Kiki Challenge is a viral dance challenge or a stunt in which people are supposed to jump out of their vehicles and dance to the track ‘In my feelings’ by Canadian rapper Drake while their cars move. It is called the Kiki challenge as the lyric of the song goes, ‘Kiki do you love me.’ This dance is done more often in the moving traffic which could endanger many lives. This crazy dance which has now entered Karnataka too and the netizens are questioning Niveditha that being a celebrity she should be a role model instead of instigating the youth to join in her in this dangerous dance moves.

Seems like this summer’s viral dance challenge has finally arrived, courtesy of Drake and an Instagram star who goes by the name of “The Shiggy Show.” The dance challenge, which consists of people showing off dance moves that caricature the lyrics of Drake’s song “In My Feelings,” became a hit online after Internet comedian Shiggy posted a video of himself last week interpreting lyrics like “Are you riding?” by dancing and miming steering a car and making a heart with his hands for lyrics like “Keke, do you love me?” The caption to the video used the hashtags, #InMyFeelingsChallenge and #DotheShiggy, which thousands of fans have now adapted to show off their own interpretive dance videos to Drake’s song.

Like its predecessors, the “mannequin challenge” and the “running man challenge,” the “In My Feelings challenge” has also become a hit with celebs, garnering videos from the likes of Ciara and her husband Russell Wilson, Odell Beckham Jr., Lala Anthony, Kevin Hart, and more. Sources reveal that even in UAE the craze has entered, and the UAE police have issued arrest warrants against three famous social media personalities there for dancing to the Kiki challenge and uploading the same on social media. As per media, an 18-year-old girl in Iowa-USA, who tried this feat, was critically injured while jumping out of the moving car, while performing “Kiki Challenge”, thereby hitting her head to the ground and becoming unconscious, and also with a fractured skull and bleeding in the brain.

Now the challenge has become a worrying trend with police across the world, including India, warning people to abstain from attempting it. Popular actors like Nia Sharma, Nora Fatehi and Adah Sharma have also taken a keen interest to it even as advisories have been issued to avoid it. “Jumping out of a moving car and dancing alongside it in the middle of the road obviously multiplies the risks involved in it. These kinds of acts endanger driver himself and others too. Further, such acts draw criminal charges. Any untoward incident may occur while performing such perilous acts on roads,” had said a Bengaluru Police Officer recently.

It is learnt that in Gujarat, the police issued an advisory after a video of a middle-aged woman performing the challenge in Vadodara went viral. The woman later told a Gujarati news channel she took the challenge to spread awareness on road safety. Posting a picture of a man dancing on the road alongside an ambulance with its doors open, the Delhi Police tweeted on Tuesday, “Dancing on the roads can open new doors for you.” “Dear parents, whether Kiki loves your child or not, we are sure you do! So please stand by your kids in all the challenges in life except #kikichallenge #KiKiHardlyAChallenge #InMyFeelingsChallenge #UPPolice (sic),” the Uttar Pradesh police wrote on Twitter.

So Mangaluru is not far from getting hooked on to this craze-therefore parents need to keep an eye on their teenage kids, and also educate them the danger this “Kiki Challenge” may cause to them. A message to the Mangalorean Youth from Team Mangalorean, “Dance on the floors, not on the roads! #KikiChallenge is not worth the fun. Keep Mangaluru roads safe for all!

  1. Confused desi teens blindly attempting to copy western stupidity!! Mangaluru has sections of population who love to show their stupidity in public. I wish they could show the same level of passion in learning positive things from Western society like critical thinking, cleanliness and respect for privacy.
