With Water Scarcity MCC to supply Water Once in Two Days Effective Apr 20- Water storage at Thumbe vented dam and at AMR Hydel Power Project’s vented dam at Shambhoor will last ONLY for the next 12 days

Mangaluru: Since the water storage water at Thumbe vented dam and at AMR Hydel Power Project’s vented dam at Shambhoor, on the upstream of Thumbe, was enough for supplying for only 12 days, Mangaluru City Corporation has decided to supply water to its citizens once in two days effective tomorrow, Wednesday 20 April, 2016.

During the meeting held at the Circuit House, B. Ramanath Rai, Minister in-charge of Dakshina Kannada and Minister for Forests, Environment and Ecology said, “Water would be supplied to industries and to people for drinking on alternate days from 20 April. Industries like Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd. and Mangalore Chemicals and Fertilizers Ltd. and the New Mangalore Port would also get water once in two days. This decision has been taken since the water storage at Thumbe vented dam and at AMR Hydel Power Project’s vented dam at Shambhoor, on the upstream of Thumbe, was enough for supplying for only 12 days. If water was supplied on alternate days, drinking water could be available until May 12”

It is learnt that the water level at Thumbe dam on 18 April 2016 stood at 9.6 ft. against the maximum level of 13 ft. Last year the level at this dam was 17.8 metres.. Lack of rainfall in Dakshina Kannada during the year 2015 has resulted in the shortage of water at these both storage places.

Meanwhile MLA J.R. Lobo suggested that the corporation to clean the open wells in the Bunder area and make people engaged in fishing to use the water.

Minister Ramanath Rai, Mayor Harinath, MLA JR Lobo has appealed to the people to use minimum water and not waste it while the city is facing scarcity of water at present.
