World Breast Feeding Week  observed at KMC Hospital Attavar

Mangaluru: The World breastfeeding week (WBW) is observed every year all over the globe to encourage breastfeeding and improve the health of babies, from the 1st to 7th August 2018. The theme for 2018 WBW is “Breastfeeding – Foundation of life.”

The programme was inaugurated by Dr Kamalakshi Bhat HOD Department of Pediatrics, KMC Hospital, Attavar, Mangalore along with Dr Nuthan Kamath Unit chief of Pediatrics & Associate Dean- KMC Mangaluru, Dr Rachan Hegde Neonatologist, Department of Pediatrics, KMC Hospital, Attavar, Mangalore. Nursing Superintendent Gracy Lobo and Premalatha HR Manager. Speaking on the occasion Dr Kamalakshi said, “The number of babies missing out on breastfeeding remains high, worldwide approximately 7.6 million babies are not breastfed according to UNICEF. Mother’s milk is a precious gift for her baby, it is the best source of nutrition for the growth and there is no other substitute to it. Exclusive breastfeeding is recommended until 6 months of age”.

There are incredible benefits of breastfeeding for both baby and mother. Breast milk contains all vital nutrients necessary for the baby and is easy to digest. It boosts the immunity of the baby which protects from infections. It plays a significant role in brain development. It is economical and free from contamination. Breastfeeding reduces the chances of breast and ovarian cancer in mother. It reduces post-delivery bleeding and chances of anemia, also enhances the emotional bond between mother and baby.

Department of Pediatrics, KMC Hospital, Attavar, Mangalore is observing World breastfeeding week. On this occasion, various activities have been planned throughout the week. Lecture on breastfeeding, role play on awareness of antenatal preparedness and postnatal care, demonstration of breastfeeding techniques, video module on lactation management was organized for the patients and quiz competition for nursing staff, and a poster competition for the hospital staff on the theme of “Breastfeeding – Foundation of life.”

Dr Anand Venugopal, Medical Superintendent, KMC Hospital Mangalore, said that this is a good initiative by the Department of Paediatrics, which gives insights to future parents, Mother’s milk is a precious gift for her baby, it is the best source of nutrition for the growth and there is no other substitute to it. Exclusive breastfeeding is recommended until 6 months of age.

The activities will culminate with the valedictory function, prize distribution and appreciation of all the participants on 7th August 2018.
