‘Action on Renaming Mulky Sunder Ram Shetty Road Planned for 29 July’- Bunt Sangha

‘Positive 100% Action on Renaming Mulky Sunder Ram Shetty Road to be taken on 29 July during the programme to be held at Town Hall on 29 July at 4 pm to commemorate 102 Birthday of MSRS ‘- Maladi Ajith Kumar Rai- President- Bunt’s Alias Nadavara Mathr Sangha (R)

” Earlier MLA J R Lobo was one among others at MCC who had approved and signed the papers to rename the road as Mulky Sunder Ram Shetty Road- and now he is also the one who stepped up and used his influence at the government level in getting a stay order on renaming the road issue. And regarding this we have the proof of the document, and will reveal it on the 29th programme day. MLA Lobo should not have played double tricks, which has led to all this controversy”- K Amarnath Shetty- Former State Minister and MLA

Mulky Sunder Ram Shetty evokes a sense of awe, reverence, appreciation and gratefulness among the people of coastal Karnataka- and he never discriminate anyone. He gave jobs to people of all community- and 60% employed at Vijaya Bank were non-Bunts. This road renaming issue has created lot of shame at present. It was absolutely wrong on St Aloysius Institution to use their student force, making them march on the streets, and protest for a silly reason. They could have settled this issue through proper discussions with both parties”- Dr Mohan Alva- President, Mulky Sunder Ram Shetty Fan Fraternity

” People should know that the Bunts Community is not a community which tries to create disharmony in the society- we are a peace loving community. Even though we respect St Aloysius Institution as a renowned educational institution, but the way they handled this road renaming situation was wrong, and we will take necessary steps pertaining to this issue during the forthcoming programme on 29 July at Town Hall. No one gains anything by renaming a road, but how games were in this issue is what has hurt us a lot, for which we will take suitable decision/action” – Maladi Ajith Kumar Rai- President- Bunt’s Alias Nadavara Mathr Sangha (R)

“It is a fact that the name of the road was Light House Hill Road and is mentioned in the St Aloysius College website, and in all their communications. The news about the unveiling of the renamed board was published in media. Late Sundararama Shetty was a student of St Aloysius College. All procedures were followed as per the law, before releasing the government’s official circular. It is also said that there is no written document available for naming the road as St Aloysius College Road. The Vijaya Bank Workers Union had followed all the rules and regulations- and had got the approval from the government to rename the road as MSRS road. But getting a stay order on this project by a few people has hurt the Bunts Community, for which we will fight to get justice”- Sadanand Shetty- Honorary President, Mulky Sunder Ram Shetty Fan Fraternity; and also the President of International Bunt’s Welfare Trust

Mangaluru: Seems like only Jesus, Ram or Allah can solve this Road Renaming Issue. Oh Jesus! Oh Ram! Oh Allah! -only these deities can come to the rescue of all these people fighting in a battle of renaming a road. Seems like all community members of different faith namely Christians, Hindus and Muslims are finally waking up in making this issue more complicated, more controversial, leading to communal disharmony. Controversy over renaming of ‘Light House Hill Road/St Aloysius College Road’ refuses to die down. In the end who wins this battle, we will have to wait and see!

A press meet was held at Hotel Ocean Pearl-Mangaluru on 25 July by Vijaya Bank Ex-Workers Union; Mulky Sunder Ram Shetty Fan Fraternity, along with Bunt’s Alias Nadavara Mathr Sangha (R) to brief the media persons about the programme to commemorate 102 birthday of Late Mulky Sunder Ram Shetty, and also to discuss about the ongoing fight in renaming a road in MSRS name. Giving a brief history of Late MSSR, Dr Mohan Alva said, ” The mention of Mulki Sunder Ram Shetty evokes a sense of awe, reverence, appreciation, and gratefulness among the people of coastal Karnataka. He excelled in everything he did, right from insurance, Triton and Atlas company, and Vijaya Bank, and several other places and position in which he served. He gave jobs to thousands of people irrespective of caste, race or creed.

Shetty respected everyone equally. Shetty touched lives of the people living Dakshina Kannada and Udupi district in many ways including opening of Vijaya Bank branches in nooks and corners and enabling people to come up in life through loans and advances which were granted to them on easy terms, providing employment to scores of poor youngsters, and helping in other ways wherever possible. Mulki Sunder Ram Shetty is one of the pillars on which glory of Tulu Nadu was achieved. On the occasion of his 102 birth year, he richly deserves to be remembered, appreciated, and emulated. And it would be befitting to rename the LHH road in his name” added Dr Alva

Addressing the gathering Sadanand Shetty said, “The name of Mulky Sunder Ram Shetty was selected unanimously by Mangaluru City Corporation and the state government. No one had recommended renaming the existing road. Moreover, the date was fixed for 2 July and the official programme invitation was printed. The programme was canceled at the last minute. This has hurt many people including members of the Bunts community. This could also harm the communal harmony between the two minority groups. Definitely, there is a political conspiracy behind it. It is a fact that the name of the road was Light House Hill Road and is mentioned in the St Aloysius College website. The news about the unveiling of the renamed board was published in media. Late Sunder Ram Shetty was a student of St Aloysius College. All procedures were followed as per the law, before releasing the government’s official circular. It is also said that there is no written document available for naming the road as St Aloysius College Road. More decision on this matter will be taken on 29 July programme”.

Also speaking during the press meet, K Amarnath Shetty said, “Shetty was instrumental in achieving high growth of the bank by merging several small banks with Vijaya Bank during this period. His heart always throbbed to the needs of the people, and everyone who approached him for help got what he wanted, once Shetty was convinced about the genuineness of the need. His generosity in providing employment to people from all communities changed the lives of these families, as the children of these families got good education, could come up in life by becoming doctors, scientists, engineers etc. “

Mulky Sunder Ram Shetty was always straightforward, and those who served the bank well were sure to get rewarded. He deserves this road to be named after him since the founder branch/former HO is located on this stretch of road. ” Earlier MLA J R Lobo was one among others at MCC who had approved and signed the papers to rename the road as Mulky Sunder Ram Shetty Road- and now he is also the one who stepped up and used his influence at the government level in getting a stay order on renaming the road issue. And regarding this, we have the proof of the document, and will reveal it on the 29th programme day. MLA Lobo should not have played double tricks, which has led to all this controversy”- added Amarnath Shetty.

Members of Vijaya Bank Ex-workers Union and other Bunt Sanghs were present during the meet, amidst a large gathering of media personnel. According to the organizers they are expecting a large crowd comprising of Hindus, Muslims and Christians for the 102 birth memory programme on 29 July at Town hall at 4 pm.

  1. Maybe the Road could have 3 names :

    1. From Vijaya Bank building till the Idgah – M.Sundaram Shetty Road
    2. From Idgah start till the end – Idgah Road
    3. The Rest will be St, Aloysius College Road.

This way all will be getting their due justice.
