Mangaluru: 13 persons in Shakir Assault case Sent to 10 days Judicial Custody to Bellary

Mangaluru: The police commissioner S Murugan held a press meet at his office on August 26, in connection with the recent assault on a youth for talking to a Hindu girl at Attavar on August 24.

Addressing the mediapersons Murugan said that as per the CCTV footage, on August 24, at around 5.27 pm Shakir came out and sat in the car, at 5.34pm the girl came out from the Supermarket. In between, conversation between the girl and Shakir as also taken place. Later, at around 5.52 pm, at a distance from the supermarket, a group pulled out Shakir from the car, tied him to the electric pole, stripped and assaulted him. At 6.10 pm everything was over, the Pandeshwar police had also reached the spot at around 6:10 pm and rescued the youth and admitted him to the hospital.

He further said that we have arrested 13 people based on the video footage spread through the social media such as whatsApp and facebook. Later the girl also filed a case against the boy. We are investigating both the cases. Earlier we had arrested 15 people, after questioning we subsequently released 2 of them. At present Thirteen are arrested and have been remanded to judicial custody for 10 days and sent to Bellary Jail.

We are investigating the case based on the telephone calls, CCTV footage and evidence collected from various sources.

He also said that rumors about the police taking one hour to reach the spot is totally false because the CCTV footage shows the time the police had reached the spot as soon as they got the information. This incident has created fear in the minds of the people and it is a shame to the society. Police are taking this case seriously and measures will be taken to prevent such incidents in future. In this regard we need public support.

When asked about the girl who filed a complaint against Shakir, Murugan said that the girl had reached the police station late. We have video recorded her statement.

Out of thirteen accused only one has a criminal record. Some arrested are from Bajrang dal and one is from Vishwa Hindu Parishat. Based on the CCTV footage we are looking out for 6 to 7 more people who were involved in the crime.

Shakir has registered a complaint against the assaulters under dacoity, rioting, threat to life and attempt to murder case.

He also said that we have taken all the measures to investigate this case. DCP Crime Shantharaj was also present.
