Mangaluru: Netravati Rakshana Samyukta Samiti (NRSS) held a press meet at Arya Samaj Mandir here, on April 20.

Addressing the mediapersons, Satyajeet Suratkal said, “In the past many committees were holding protest against the Yettinahole project, but today we have formed NRSS by uniting all the individual organizations and committees. We will hold a protest at 4 PM on April 21 at Suratkal where the Chief Minister is supposed to visit to lay the foundation stone for a road. The protesters will wear black mask, carry empty pots and wave black flags as a sign of silent protest. I request every citizen to take part in this protest.”

He further said, “We are not against the Yettinahole project, but we demand a debate on the pros and cons of the project. The peaceful protests of the coastal people have not yielded results yet and that is why we have formed NRSS. When the CM comes to the district, he should decide a date to have a discussion with the people of this region.”

“It is mid April and Mangaluru is already facing shortage of water. If the project is implemented then we will face water crisis from the month of February itself. If any other minister supporting this project turns up in this district, they will face a similar protest,” he added.

He said, “To protect the interests of the coastal region, the government should protect the coastal water bodies, Yettinahole project should be halted, the technical committee should include a representative from the coastal region to find water sources, coastal region should be declared as a fishing industrial area, before implementing any projects the people of the coastal region should be taken into confidence. Already Rs 2000 crores are spent towards the project and if our demands are not met then we will continue our protest.”
