74th Independence Day Celebrations at Sandesha & Infant Mary Jesus Church-Bajjodi

Mangaluru: India today celebrated its 74th Independence Day amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Several changes have swept in this time keeping in mind the precautionary measures- but still, people of India paid tribute to the martyrs who laid down their lives for the freedom of this country. India’s Independence Day reminds the country’s citizens of all the sacrifices the freedom fighters have made to secure the country’s future. Since its independence, India has made stellar progress in every field, including education, military and space programmes. Commemorating the nation’s independence from British rule, India celebrated its 74th Independence Day, but with a slight twist. Owing to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, there were no social gatherings. In lieu of the precautions taken, there were no grand performances.
I-Day celebrations were held at Infant Mary Jesus Church-Bajjodi-Mangaluru on 15 August 2020 at 7:30 am, where the flag hoisting was done by Francis Maxim Moras- the Senior Traffic Warden from Mangaluru City, joined by the Parish Priest, Asst Parish Priest, and board members of the Church Council. Also on 15th August at 9:00 am Independence Day celebrations were held at Sandesha Kala Kendra, Nanthur, Mangaluru, and Francis Maxim Moras was once again the chief guest. The flag was hoisted by the chief guest along with Sandesha Director Fr Francis Assisi Almeida, Roy Castelino- Trustee, Mrs Savitha- Manager, among others.

Speaking on both the occasions, Maxim Moras said, “We are breathing in a free India because of hundreds of thousands of our freedom fighters and today’s security forces, be it the army, the police or other security forces. We are passing through strange times. We need to take adequate precautions. Many have played a vital role during this COVID-19 crisis, and we need to thank all those healthcare workers, doctors and nurses, who have worked tirelessly to serve the nation. Many have even lost their lives. The nation salutes them. The day of freedom and Independence is a day we remember the sacrifice of all our freedom fighters. It is a day which brings joy and hope to us all”.
