Udupi: Case Filed Against Sharan Pumpwell for Alleged Disruption of Public Peace

Udupi: A formal case has been registered against Sharan Pumpwell, a prominent leader of a Hindu organization, at the Udupi Town Police Station. The charges stem from a press conference held by Pumpwell, which authorities allege incited religious hatred and disrupted public peace and order within the Udupi district.

According to official reports, the Udupi Town Police initiated the investigation following the dissemination of a video recording on social media platforms. Bharathesh Kankanavadi, PSI (Crime and Security) of Udupi Town Police Station, while monitoring social media, received a video on WhatsApp. The video depicted Sharan Pumpwell addressing the media on a news channel, during which he purportedly made provocative statements regarding a recent cow slaughter incident in Kunjalu. Law enforcement officials contend that these statements were deliberately intended to incite animosity between different religious communities.

The police report indicates that the video, featuring Pumpwell’s statements, was widely circulated across various WhatsApp groups. Authorities claim that this widespread distribution served to propagate misinformation and create an atmosphere of unrest among the general public, particularly in advance of the completion of the official inquiry into the Kunjalu incident. The content of Pumpwell’s address is alleged to have contained inflammatory rhetoric designed to provoke religious discord and undermine communal harmony.

Based on these findings, the Udupi Town Police have registered a formal case against Sharan Pumpwell under Crime Number 123/2025, Section 353(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The investigation into the matter is currently ongoing, and further details are expected to emerge as the police continue to gather evidence and examine the circumstances surrounding the press conference and its subsequent dissemination. Local authorities have emphasized their commitment to maintaining public order and ensuring that individuals who incite violence or disrupt communal harmony are brought to justice by the law.
