Ashok Ambhire of Dahanu-Maharashtra Awarded Nat’l Maritime Search & Rescue Award

Mangaluru: It is indeed heartening to inform that Shri Ashok Ambhire of Dahanu, Maharashtra has been conferred with NMSAR Award for the year 2018-19 by Chairman NMSAR Board at Vigyan Bhavan New Delhi today. The Director General of Indian Coast Guard conferred the award on him. This award is given to the exceptional fishing boat / fishermen for undertaking or assistance rendered for Search and Rescue operations in Indian Search and Rescue Region. The aim of this award is to recognize the efforts of our fisher folk and encourage them to provide whole hearted support for Search and Rescue operations at sea. The Search and Rescue Award for Fisherman consists of a Trophy with Commendation Certificate. The action of Shri Ashok Ambhire is considered to be exceptionally noteworthy of emulation by the maritime fraternity and hence was chosen for their award.

Indian Coast Guard is the nodal agency for Search & Rescue in the Indian Search and Rescue Region. Towards this mandate, Indian Coast Guard maintains an efficient Search and Rescue Organisation and coordinates all Search and Rescue efforts at sea. The Director General Coast Guard is the chairman of the NMSAR Board. The Indian Coast Guard Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre’s (MRCCs) and Maritime Rescue Sub Centre’s (MRSCs) are manned 24X7 to respond to distress messages received to coordinate Search and Rescue missions. Till date ICG has saved 9678 precious lives in distress at sea.

NARRATIVE –RESCUE OPERATION

– At about 2100 hrs.of 19th Aug 19, Coast Guard Station Dahanu received a telephonic message from chairman Gungawada Machhimar Society that an Indian Fishing Boat named Bhagya Laxmi (IND-MH-2243) has capsized at sea off Dahanu, Maharashtra coast approximately 32 Nautical Miles due to prevailing heavy swell and rough weather conditions.

– Immediately, Coast Guard Ship Achookwas diverted to render assistance. In the meantime, Owner of the capsized fishing boat also intimated Coast Guard Station Dahanu that other fishing boats in the vicinity were trying to retrieve the capsized boat.

– Prior arrival of Coast Guard Ship the fishing boat Pawan Sai who was fishing in vicinity,arrived on-scene and rescued all 11 fishermen from the ill-fated fishing boat Bhagya Laxmi. Not only that She took 90 percent submerged Fishing Boat Bhagya Laxmi (IND-MH-2243) under tow and successfully towed her back to Dakati Harbor Dahanu.

– The immediate assistance by Fishing Boat Pawan Sai resulted in saving 11 lives of fishermen at sea which reflects utmost professionalism and commitments towards mariners’ life at sea, which is highly appreciated.

The response to the marine emergency and the selfless efforts to render assistance in saving of 11 precious lives of fishermen ex FB Bhagya Laxmi by FB Pavan Sai is highly appreciated, praiseworthy and has been awarded with SEARCH AND RESCUE AWARD FOR FISHERMAN for the year 2019.
