Bengal murder case: Court grants bail to arrested Trinamool strongman Sheikh Shahjahan’s wife Taslima Bibi
Kolkata: A court has granted anticipatory bail to Taslima Bibi, the wife of arrested Trinamool Congress strongman Sheikh Shahjahan, on a bond of Rs 5,000 in connection with the murder case.
The Barasat court in North 24 Parganas district on Saturday granted Taslima anticipatory bail in the case concerning the death of the son and driver of Bholanath Ghosh, a key witness in the case against Sheikh Shahjahan in West Bengal.
When Ghosh filed the complaint at the Nazat police station, he named Taslima Bibi and Sheikh Shahjahan as the main accused.
During the hearing of the case, the district judge observed that the police had not yet been able to show any involvement of Taslima in this incident. Therefore, based on this, the court granted relief to Shahjahan’s wife.
As a result, the anticipatory bail application was granted. However, the judge clearly said that she must cooperate with the police in the investigation and also participate in the judicial process.
On the morning of December 10, last year, Ghosh, a key witness in the ration “scam” and sexual offence case against Shahjahan, was allegedly targeted with a speedy truck on the Basanti Highway near Kolkata’s Science City. Ghosh survived the accident, but his son and driver died on the spot.
Following this, Bholanath approached the Nazat police station and filed a written complaint against Sheikh Shahjahan and his wife, along with eight others.
An FIR was registered under sections related to murder and attempted murder. The complaint also said that Sheikh Shahjahan informed his wife about the plan, and then, with the help of his other associates, orchestrated the entire plan.
Taslima was also on the ED’s radar in connection with the attack on the ED team in Sandeshkhali in 2024. At that time, she was summoned and interrogated for approximately 11 hours.
On January 5, 2024, a team of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) visited the Agarhati area under the Sandeshkhali block I to investigate the ration corruption case. The operation was against Sheikh Shahjahan, the Executive Director of North 24 Parganas Zilla Parishad.
The followers of Shahjahan had attacked the ED team. In February, the area saw widespread protests as villagers accused Shahjahan and his aides of land grabbing and sexually harassing women.
Shahjahan, who was on the run for 55 days after his supporters attacked the ED team on their way to search his home in connection with a ration scam, was arrested on February 29, 2024.
