Big Hero 6 highest grossing animated movie

Los Angeles, March 17 (IANS) Oscar-winning movie “Big Hero 6” has been named as the highest grossing animated movie of 2014, taking in $620 million globally.

The film earned a total of $221 million in the US, making it Walt Disney Animation Studios’ third biggest domestic release of all time, reports aceshowbiz.com.

Co-directed by Don Hall and Chris Williams, the film’s worldwide total has surpassed that of “Tangled”, making it the studio’s third biggest global release after “Frozen” (2013) and “The Lion King”.

In China, “Big Hero 6” has become Disney’s biggest animated release, earning $51 million since being released in the country on February 28.

In South Korea, Russia and Japan the big screen feature became the second biggest animated release by Disney, grossing more than $75 million. In Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia it was the top animated release of all time.

Based on Marvel comics of the same name, “Big Hero 6” tells the story of “the special bond that develops between Baymax, a plus-sized inflatable robot, and prodigy Hiro Hamada as they team up with a group of friends to form a band of high-tech heroes.”

Recently, “Big Hero 6” won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film.
