DUSU elections: Voting begins amid tight security, ABVP predicts 4-0 victory
New Delhi: Voting for the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) elections commenced on Friday amid tight security arrangements across the varsity campus, with student leaders expressing confidence in their prospects and Delhi Police maintaining strong security and traffic arrangements to ensure peaceful polling.
DUSU’s current President Aryan Maan said the response from students had been positive and expressed confidence that the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) would win all four key posts.
“Voting has commenced, and the response from students has been very positive. This year, Vidyarthi Parishad will achieve victory with a 4–0. At the same time, I would like to say that other student organisations should prepare their usual excuses, like vote theft and EVM hacking, just as they do every year. Vidyarthi Parishad steals students’ hearts, and we hack students’ hearts…” Maan told IANS.
Delhi Police officials said adequate arrangements had been made at polling centres, with additional personnel deployed to manage security as well as traffic movement around the colleges.
DCP North Niharika Bhatt outlined the security arrangements in the North Delhi area.
“Adequate arrangements have been made by the Delhi Police here. The North District police force has been deployed, along with a large number of personnel from outside forces. A complete arrangement has also been made by the Traffic Police to ensure that there are no traffic violations and that all rules are properly enforced…” Bhatt said.
The high-stakes student union elections are primarily a contest between the RSS student wing ABVP and the Congress-backed National Students’ Union of India (NSUI). The results are scheduled to be declared on Saturday.
ABVP’s Yash Dabas is contesting against NSUI’s Vijay Shankar Meena for the post of DUSU President. A total of 25 candidates are in the fray for the president’s post.
Following scrutiny of nominations for all four posts, 20 candidates were approved for the Vice President’s post, 24 for Secretary, and 19 for Joint Secretary.
The DUSU 2026 elections have assumed significance against the backdrop of student concerns over examination irregularities and accommodation facilities. A Gen Z protest was held at Jantar Mantar in July over alleged examination irregularities, while the collapse of a PG building in Satya Niketan in south Delhi highlighted concerns over the availability and safety of student accommodation in the national capital.
Fresh students enrolled in Delhi University colleges or departments this year are also eligible to vote. First-year students can cast their vote by producing a valid fee receipt along with a government-issued identity document such as Aadhaar, PAN, Voter ID or driving licence if their college identity card has not yet been issued.
With polling taking place across the university’s colleges and departments, security personnel have been deployed at and around polling centres to regulate movement and maintain order.
