Fishermen offer Samudra Puja at Malpe

Udupi: A large number of the fishermen community offered prayers to the Sea God ‘Samudra Puja’ at Malpe beach here on Thursday, August 18.

The prayers to the Sea God are offered on the last day of fishing holidays, which has to be a full moon day. The fishermen will venture into the sea only on the following day, that is from Thursday (as per the Hindu calendar).

Prior to the Puja organized by Vadabhandeshwar Temple Malpe, a procession was taken out from the Temple to Malpe.

This was followed by a Samudra Puja wherein milk, fruits, vegetables, tender coconuts, dry coconuts, flowers and other commodities were offered.

Speaking to the media persons, the fishermen said that the day is considered very auspicious as a large number of them offer prayers, to safeguard and protect their family members (fishermen) from all evils when they go to the sea for fishing for days and weeks together.

Speaking on the occasion, Minister Madhwaraj wished the fishermen a good catch this season.

Raghupathi Bhat Ex-MLA Udupi, Yashpal Suvarna president DK and Udupi fish sellers federation and others were present.
