Mangaluru: This week taste the culture that embraces richness in every sense. Savour a wide variety of authentic lip-smacking dishes from the coasts of Malabar cooked to perfection- and that’s “Kuttanad Food” originated from a place called ‘Kuttanad’ in Alappuzha, Allepey and Kottayam Districts, in the state of Kerala. Come, be a part of the Kuttanad Food Festival now going on until this weekend at Simbly South Restaurant, near Collector’s gate, Balmatta Circle Mangaluru and take your taste buds on an expedition right into the heart of The God’s Own Country – Kerala. Due the overwhelming response, this food fest which was suppose to end lat weekend, has been extended due to popular demand until June 26, 2017.

Kuttanad Food Festival at Simbly South brings to you a cuisine so divine that takes you right into the Land of Boat houses and Kathakali! Kuttanad is known as the rice bowl of Kerala. Through this week long festival, Simbly South will bring you the little known and hard to source delicious flavours of this region. Sit back, and indulge. For starters you can feast on- MaIli Kozhi (Chicken) – Crushed coriander and pepper marinated with chef’s special masala; Peralan: Kozhi (Chicken) / Aadu (Mutton) – Koonthal (Squid) / Tharavu (Duck) – Choice of meat cooked in Kuttanad spices and coconut milk; Kuttanad Kozhi Pepper Roast – Chicken roasted with Kuttanad spices; Kuttanad Mutta Roast – Egg tossed with onion and tomato roasted with Kuttanad rich masala; Kuttanad Njandu Roast – Crab cooked in Kuttanad Spices and coconut milk, among many other items.

Chef Santhosh hailing from Alleppey-Kerala an exclusive chef for the Kerala style cuisine along with Joseph, the Executive Chef at Simbly South have both collaborated to bring home-cooked and authentic dishes of Kuttanad from Kerala to the people of Kudla longing for some good food. This food festival will feature plenty of dishes cooked exquisitely by these two chefs, brimming with authentic varieties of local food from Kerala. Together with these two chefs, Simbly South wants to bring in the entire cultural heritage of Kerala and its delectable cuisine and not only restrict it to the vegetarian taste buds and go beyond that, to showcase the rich culinary offerings of the state and its people.

Speaking to Team Mangalorean, Damodar Shetty said, “Food is our common ground a universal experience. With this pretension we are presenting for the First time ‘Kuttanad food festival’, and we got a prodigious response during the first week that we launched it, so we decided to extend it for one more week. We would like to invite all gastronomes to savor some of the authentic cuisine’s from God’s own country now going on until 26 June. During this Fest period of sumptuous food, expressive art, – Come and join us to spur your taste buds with some exhilarating Kerala tradition and culture at this Kuttanad Food Festival. “

Both Damodar and Nithin were kind enough to invite Team Mangalorean to savour some of the Kuttanad delicacies- and we were all “thrilled” to see the different varieties of dishes that we were served by the courteous and friendly restaurant staff, and we were totally “filled” with all the sumptuous food that we consumed. Among the food we tasted, The piece de resistance was a tangy fish curry and I learnt it was due to gamboge or Malabar tamarind, mistaken by most as kokum (Garcinia). The yellowish fruit is de-seeded, rubbed with coconut oil and salt, sun-dried and smoked in kitchen chimneys to acquire its unique taste. It is typical to central Kerala where it is used as a souring agent in fish dishes. I loved it!
