Home Nurse Arrested in Hiriyadka House Theft Case; Gold Worth Rs 1.85 Lakh Seized

Udupi: Hiriyadka police arrested a 45-year-old man in connection with the theft of a gold chain from an elderly woman’s house in Kukkehalli village. The police seized 15 grams of gold, valued at approximately Rs 1.85 lakh, and the motorcycle allegedly used in the crime.

The accused is identified as Umesh Shetty. He worked as a home nurse and resided in a rented house belonging to Mahendra Shetty in Subrahmanya Nagar, Puttur village, Udupi district. He was arrested near his residence on October 23, 2026. He was subsequently produced before a court and remanded to judicial custody.

According to the complaint, Shankar Kulal (53), son of Babi Handti (75), who resides at Badapalu in Kukkehalli village, lodged a complaint at Hiriyadka Police Station on September 14, 2026.

The incident reportedly occurred on September 13. At around 10:30 a.m., a man aged between 40 and 45 visited Babi Handti’s house. He told her that he knew about the death of her son, Dinesh, and claimed that insurance officials would visit her house the following day. He also offered to help her obtain a higher insurance payout. After spending about 15 minutes at the house, he left.

Around noon, Babi Handti removed a gold chain weighing approximately two pavans that she had been wearing and placed it on a table inside the house.

At around 1:30 p.m., the same man reportedly returned and spoke to her, offering words of consolation. With the house door open, she asked him to sit on the veranda while she went to the garden to bring the cattle into the shed.

When she returned, the man had left. Suspecting something was amiss, she checked inside the house and found the gold chain placed on the table was missing.

After registering the case, the police examined around 50 to 60 CCTV recordings and used technical evidence to identify and arrest the accused. The stolen gold and the motorcycle allegedly used in the crime were seized.

The operation was carried out under the leadership of Udupi Sub-Division Deputy Superintendent of Police Belliyappa and Circle Inspector Gopikrishna. PSI Puneeth Kumar B.E. (Law and Order), and police personnel Praveen Rai, Praveen Shetty, Ramesh Herga, Krishna Poojari, and Mahantesh were part of the operation.
