ICYM Karkala deanery holds youth convention ‘Yuva Samagam 2018’

Karkala: The Indian Catholic Youth Movement Karkala deanery level youth convention “Yuva Samagam 2018” was held at the St Dominic Church hall, Miyar on August 26.

The deanery-level programme comprised of an inaugural ceremony, panel Session on the topic ‘Christian leadership’, holy mass, cultural competition and valedictory function. Around 180 youth from 6 parishes of the Karkala deanery participated in the Yuva Samagam.

The programme was inaugurated by lighting of the lamp by the chief guest Dr Vincent Alva, principal of Milagres college. Fr Jerome A Monteiro, parish priest of St. Dominic Church Miyar, Fr Sunil D’Silva, director, ICYM Karkal deanery, Dion D’Souza, president, ICYM Udupi diocese, Rayan Mendonca, ICYM Miyar unit animator, Clinton Cardoza, president, ICYM Karkala Deanery and Preemal, Secretary of ICYM Karkal deanery, Lavina Correa and Seema Cardoza president and secretary of ICYM Miyar unit were present for the inaugural programme.

In his message, Dr Vincent Alva shared his personal experience in ICYM and encouraged the youth to build up their unity and to become the future good citizens.

Fr Sunil D’Silva and Fr Edwin D’Souza stressed on the importance of youth utilizing every chance they get to come forward and develop in all ways.

Clinton Cardoza welcomed the gathering, Mishal Ferao delivered the vote of thanks and Preemal pinto introduced the moderator of the panel session to the gathering. Fr Sunil D’Silva, Fr Jerome Monteiro, Fr Edwin D’Souza, Fr Reginald Pinto and the moderator of the panel session joined the programme.

Soon after the inaugural ceremony, a panel session on the topic “Christian Leadership” with the theme of National Youth Sunday was conducted. Five topics under this theme discussed were:

1. Catholic faith among youth
2. How seriously are we involved in the church?
3. Nationalism, leadership, jobs
4. Love relationship in youth and responsibilities
5. Intellectual growth in Catholic youth.
6. Youth panellists from 6 units expressed their view on these five topics.

The moderator Dr Vincent Alva concluded the session saying, “The younger generation namely today’s Christian youth must become serious in life and stand against violations as will be the pillars of our nation who are capable of making India a secular and safe country.” ‘

Fr Edwin D’Souza, director ICYM Udupi diocese presided over the programme and congratulated the panellists and youth for their active participation.

ICYM groups from six parishes presented skits and songs on the current issues.

The valedictory function was presided by Fr Sunil D’Silva, Director of Karkal deanery. Other dignitaries on the dais were Fr Jerome Monteiro-parish priest of St. Dominic church Miyar, Fr Anil Cornelio Roshan, Assistant priest of Hirgan Church, Fr Mark, Elsi D’Souza Animator of Karkal Deanry, Dion D’Souza, ICYM diocese president, Clinton Cardoza and Preemal pinto ICYM deanery president and secretary respectively.

The sponsors of the event as well as the judges of the competitions were honoured.

In his message, Fr Anil Cornelio congratulated the youth for gathering together in such huge numbers. He also appreciated the youth for their creativity and congratulated them for conducting the panel session.

Fr Sunil D’Silva announced the results of the competitions. Ajekar unit were the winners, Attur unit was the first runner-up and Hirgan Unit was the second runner-up.

Avith Lobo welcomed the gathering and Preemal Pinto delivered the vote of thanks. The event concluded with the ICYM anthem.
