IMD Issues Heavy Rain Alert for Karnataka; Red Warning for Coastal Districts on September 24
Mangaluru: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy to extremely heavy rainfall across several parts of Karnataka over the next few days, accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds. The Coastal Karnataka region is expected to bear the brunt of the weather system, with extremely heavy rain likely on September 24, prompting a red alert for Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts.
According to the IMD, the state will experience a phased escalation in rainfall intensity beginning September 22, with colour-coded alerts issued for districts in Coastal Karnataka, North Interior Karnataka and South Interior Karnataka based on the severity of the expected weather conditions.
On September 22, a yellow alert has been issued for Bagalkot, Raichur, Koppal, Gadag and Dakshina Kannada, where heavy rainfall is forecast. Officials have advised residents in these districts to remain alert and monitor local weather advisories.
The situation is expected to intensify on September 23, when Kalaburagi, Vijayapura, Udupi, Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru and Dakshina Kannada are likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall. These districts have been placed under an orange alert. In addition, a yellow alert has been issued for Bidar, Yadgir, Raichur, Bagalkot, Vijayanagara, Uttara Kannada, Chitradurga and Hassan, where rainfall is expected to remain significant but comparatively lower in intensity.
The most severe weather is forecast for September 24, when Dakshina Kannada and Udupi are expected to experience extremely heavy rainfall. The IMD has placed both districts under a red alert, signalling the possibility of dangerous weather conditions and the need for heightened preparedness. An orange alert has been issued for Kodagu, Hassan, Chikkamagaluru and Uttara Kannada, while Dharwad, Gadag, Koppal, Raichur, Tumakuru, Mandya and Mysuru are under a yellow alert.
The IMD has cautioned that the rainfall may be accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds, increasing the risk of localised disruption, waterlogging and difficulty in travel. Residents have been advised to exercise caution, avoid unnecessary movement in affected areas and stay updated with official weather warnings.
Fishermen along the Karnataka coast have also been asked to take necessary precautions in view of the deteriorating sea conditions. The IMD’s coastal bulletin has warned of squally weather along the Karnataka coast, with winds likely to blow at 10–15 knots and gust up to 25 knots. As a result, maritime activities may face restrictions, and fishermen have been urged to avoid venturing into the sea during the warning period.
The latest forecast further indicates that Coastal Karnataka may continue to receive heavy rainfall on September 25, after which the weather conditions are expected to improve gradually.
Authorities have been advised to remain vigilant, particularly in low-lying and vulnerable areas, as the expected rainfall may trigger flooding, traffic disruptions, and related hazards. The IMD’s warnings underline the need for coordinated preparedness measures across the affected districts as Karnataka braces for a period of intense monsoon activity.
