Light Oil wick lamps programme marks world tourism Day at Kathale Basadi, Barkur

Udupi: To signal the World Tourism Day celebrations in the district, ‘light Oil wick lamps’ (Kattale Basadiyalli Deepa Hacchona ) a unique programme was organised at Bakur here on Tuesday, September 26.

Additional Deputy Commissioner G Anuradha inaugurated the programme by lighting the lamp and said that this year the district administration decided to celebrate the World Tourism Day 27 with a central theme – “Sustainable Tourism – A tool of development”. The focus of the celebration will see the district administration, tourism department, Nirmithi Kendra, beach development and management committee and the coastal tourism committee focus on ensuring that all places of importance for tourism are kept clean under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. The Government departments in association with voluntary organisations, Yuvaka Mandals and Panchayats will clean up the Gometeshwara Betta, Chaturmukh Basadi premises, Koti-Chenayya theme park in Karkala and Kathale Basadi premises at Barkur. The cleanup will also be held at Jumlutirtha in Hebri, Manappala Lake in Manipal, Kodi beach in Kundapur among others. To get students actively involved in the process, photography competition, essay writing contest and art competition will be organized for students of schools and colleges, she added.

K Moortheswari, Superintendent Archaeologist Bengaluru division speaking on the occasion said that the various national monuments of India are part of ancient heritage of India, something which is closely associated with the identity of the nation. A series of structures or areas deemed to be of national importance are termed as national monuments and are thus conserved. The State and Union Government has initiated steps to preserve various monuments in the state. The authorities would take action to clear encroachments, regulate traffic around the site and maintain the recommended guidelines to promote tourism, she added.

Later those gathered along with the guests lit the Oil wick lamps around the Kathale Basadi.
