Madikeri: Six-day Exhibition-cum-sale of Handloom Products Expected to Boost Sagging Trade

Madikeri: Chodumada Shareen Subbaiah, president of Kodagu zilla panchayat, inaugurated ‘Cauvery Vastra Siri’ handloom products exhibition-cum-sale event on Gandhi maidan here on Monday.

She said that besides giving an opportunity to buyers to acquire quality products on the occasion of Makara Sankranti, the fair was going to give a big boost to the sagging prospects of the handloom trade. She also assured of all assistance from the zilla panchayat. She advised the sellers to strike an even balance between optimum quality and affordable prices.

The fair is open for six days up to Jan 10. Handloom weavers’ cooperative societies from Kodagu, Ballari, Chitradurga, Kolar, Bagalkot, Bengaluru, Tumakuru and Chikkaballapura are taking part in the fair. In all, 12 stalls have been set up.

ZP vice president Allaranda Beena Bollamma, ZP education and health standing committee chairperson B B Bharatish, handloom and textiles department assistant director Guruswamy, town municipal president Julekabi, vice president Leela Sheshamma, municipal commissioner B B Pushpavati and others were present on the occasion.

Besides a wide variety of silk, ilakal and cotton saris, other products like bedsheets, towels, handkerchiefs and cotton items are also on sale, according to the organizers.
