It’s all miles of smiles as Prof. (Dr.) U.S.Krishna Nayak, Principal and Dean, A.B.Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences; and Chairman of Board of Studies in Dental Sciences-Nitte University, has been conferred with the prestigious Membership of the Faculty of Dental Surgery of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons, Glasgow (MFDS-RCPS). Dr.Nayak is also the Past National President, Indian Dental Association and Indian Orthodontic Society. He has been already conferred with many Fellowships and recipient of many National and International Awards and Accolades including Karnataka State Rajyothsava Award and ‘Man of the year in Dental Health’ by the American Biographical Institute.
The adage “It’s not the years in your life but the life in your years” holds a virtue of proximity to one of the most iconic dentists in the history of the profession, Dr. U S Krishna Nayak. At a youthful 54, Dr. Nayak’s list of professional achievements can be spread out in a long book of prolific resumes. For most accomplished professionals, the opening sentence, “They are best known for ….,” is usually followed by one or two bold triumphs. For Dr. Nayak, “He is best known for …” can’t be summarized in one sentence. Not even a paragraph. For Dr. Krishna Nayak, getting the prestigious membership of the Royal College is just the appetizer in a multicourse list of amazing accolades that would make his family members, colleagues, well-wishers and friends proud.
How does one possess the different personas necessary to lead such a multidimensional career? How does one make it all look so easy? All because of hard work, determination, dedication, commitment and selfless service to the community-and Dr U S Krishna Nayak has all that qualities and has achieved success by putting those qualities into action. Dr. U.S. Krishna Nayak, son of (Late) Dr. U.S. Mohandas Nayak did his schooling and Pre-University Education at St. Aloysius School and College, Mangalore. In the year 1982 he completed his graduation at College of Dental Surgery,Kasturba Medical College, Manipal – Mysore University. Dr. U.S. Krishna Nayak successfully completed his Post Graduation in Orthodontics at College of Dental Surgery,Kasturba Medical College, Manipal – Mangalore University in the year 1985.
After procuring his M.D.S. it was but natural that the family practice in dentistry beckoned him and he plunged into it with much enthusiasm and innovations. Dr. Krishna Nayak along with his illustrious father and dynamic brother Dr. Deepak Nayak have raised the caliber of this profession by offering the best and the latest in services and carved a niche for themselves not just in the city of Mangaluru but entire Karnataka and neighbouring Kerala as well. Today Nayak Dental Clinic and Orthodontic Centre is a benchmark for dental professionals and a name to reckon with in private practice.
Dr. Krishna Nayak with his inexhaustible knowledge of profession ventured into academic collaterally with an urge to share his know-how with like minded people and today 25 years down the line, is the Dean Academics in the most prestigious A.B Shetty Memorial Institute for Dental Sciences. Thousands have benefited with the generosity and brilliance of this noble teacher. He was the youngest President of the Indian Dental Association Head Office and has also been the President of The Indian Orthodontic Society. Dr Krishna Nayak served as an Assistant Professor, Reader, Associate Professor, Dean, Academics and currently Principal and Dean, Senior Professor & Head, Post Graduate and Ph.D guide at the Department of Orthodontics & Dentofacial Orthopaedics, A.B.Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences, NITTE University, Mangaluru; Dean, Students Welfare at the same institution (1986 – 2001); Member, Mangalore University Senate & Academic Council (2 consecutive terms) (1993- 1998); Served as Member, Board of Studies in Dental Surgery, Mangalore, Calicut, Annamalai Universities and Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences Bangalore; Senate member, Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences. Bangalore.(2005-08); Ph.D guide in the Specialty of Orthodontics at the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences- Karnataka since 2005; Ph.D guide at NITTE University since 2008; Guided 60 Post Graduate Dissertations over 25 years of active post graduate teaching; Member, Finance committee, Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences.Bangalore. His selfless contribution to the profession and the community have fetched him awards galore, the most important ones being ‘The Fellowship of Indian Board of Orthodontics’ in the year 2000 for Excellence in Clinical Orthodontics, ‘ Indian Dentist of the Year’ award in 2001, ‘Karnataka State Rajyotsava’ award, the highest civilian award given by the state government in the year 2003, which also makes him the first person in the field of Dentistry to receive it and most recently he has been conferred with ‘ The Man of the Year in Dental Health’ for 2008 “By the American Biographical Society” which probably recognizes all his contributions in a most comprehensive manner.
Regarding Dr Nayak’s professional service and achievements-he was National President, Indian Dental Association (2000-2001); National President, Indian Orthodontic Society (1999-2000); President, International College of Dentists (Section VI- India, Sri Lanka and Nepal section) (2012); Chairman, Pierre Fauchard Academy (2010-11); President, IDA Karnataka state branch (1995-96); National President, Indian academy of Dental Educationists (1996-2000); President, Indian society of Dental Research, Karnataka state branch (1998-00); National Vice-President, IDA Head Office (1990-91); Vice President, International Association for Dental Research (India Division); Chairman, Council on Dental Health, IDA Head Office (1992-94); Vice Chairman, Indian Dental Association Karnataka Charitable Trust (Regd.); Hon. State Secretary, IDA Karnataka state branch (1989-94); Vice President, Indian Orthodontic Society (1993-94);Chairman of various sub-committees of IDA Head Office; Executive Committee Member ,the Indian Society for Dental Research since 201; Elected to the Dental Council of India from the prestigious category of Principals/Deans of Dental Colleges in the Country (2013); was conferred the mastership of the International College of Dentists-USA (2014).
Dr Krishna Nayak has over 150 publications in national and international journals to his credit, and has also presented and published several award winning scientific papers in various national and international journals and conferences. he has delivered many orations, key-note lectures at many local, state and national IDA conferences; and has been invited as international guest speaker at the 8th international orthodontic congress in London in September 2015. Dr Nayak has conducted and sponsored numerous dental health camps- and has contributed through other service organizations like being the Management Committee Member, Sri Sudhindra Medical Mission, Mangaluru; Active Rotarian (1985- 2001); Member of Dental Health care committee of RI district 3180 in 1989-90 & 1990-91; Member and active worker of Indraprastha welfare society .Bangalore; Trustee of Indraprastha charity foundation & Indraprastha Vidyalaya, and Secretary, Mangalore Round Table 1993-94.
Dr US Krishna Nayak is a recipient of many awards namely : the outstanding professor award by the Indian Orthodontic Society (2014); Best Dentist Award by ‘HEAL TALK’ presented at FDI World Conference, New Delhi(2014); Rajiv Gandhi Award for Human Excellence -2002; Indian Dentist of the year Award-2002; Karnataka State Rajyotsava Award – 2003; Best Research paper published in the Journal of Indian Orthodontic Society (2010); Best Research Paper Award at the National Orthodontic Conference – 1995 & 2001; Best Clinical Paper Award at 39th National Indian Orthodontic Conference -2004; Special recognition award from International College of Dentists for outstanding International Education Acumen Award – 2007; Jewel of India Award-2005; Best Citizens of India Award-1999;Vijayashree award-2001; National Pride of the Millennium Award; Kuvempu Vishwamaana Prashasthi-2005; Man of the year in Dental Health-2008 by the American Biographical Institute; Man of the year – India 2009, Award by the American Biographical Institute; Lifetime Achievement Award 2010 by the United Cultural Convention; 21st Century Award for achievement by the American Biographical Institute; Mother Teresa excellence award-2010 by Integrated Council for Socio Economic Progress, Thrissur; Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary International and many more.

Dr Nayak has been a great leader, mentor, professor and a renowned physician. Leadership is extremely important as a dentist and employer. However, everyone views leadership differently. Dr Nayak personally leads staff and patients through honesty, positive reinforcement, and ethical behavior. By treating people honestly and as equals, he has gained their respect. By always taking the ethical approach, he has gained their trust. By surpassing their expectations and giving them genuine positive reinforcement, they have become his raving fans.
