Minister Dr Jayamla launches Pulse Polio Drive in Udupi

Udupi: The Udupi district minister in-charge Dr Jayamala on Sunday, March 10 launched the Pulse Polio Immunisation programme at the Koosamma Shambhu Shetty, Haji Abdulla memorial Govt Women and Child Hospital, Udupi.

Later speaking to media persons Dr Jayamala said that, though polio has been eradicated in the country since 2014, the immunization drive should be conducted on a regular basis to prevent the spreading of the virus from foreign nationals who visit the country. The society should be free of debilitating diseases like polio.

According to deputy Commissioner Hephsiba Rani Korlapati, 77,740 children will be administered polio drops. There are 63,630 children in rural areas and 14,110 in urban areas.

“Of the total 657 Polio booths, 569 are in rural areas and 88 in urban areas. Those apart nine mobile booths have also been set up.” The inauguration of the drive will be held at Beedanagudde Anganawadi,” said Korlapati.

As many as 2,774 Accredited Social Health Activists, Anganwadi workers, junior health assistants and members of voluntary organisations will work as volunteers while 137 supervisors will be part of the campaign, she said.

In rural areas, volunteers will visit houses on March 11 to 12, while in the urban areas it will be on March 11 to 13, she added.
