The prosecution’s case rested on the premise that the murders were a result of a heated dispute between the accused and the victims over the cutting of tree branches. Upon witnessing the assault on her husband, Helen D’Souza rushed to his aid. However, the accused, Alphons Saldanha, pursued her and inflicted fatal stab wounds, leading to her death at the scene.
Following the double murder, the Mulki Police Department registered a case (Crime No. 31/2020) invoking Sections 341, 504, 506, and 302 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). ASI Umesh K. and Head Constable Vadiraaj (No. 725) provided crucial assistance during the investigative process.
The trial, presided over initially by Mallikarjun, Judge of the 1st Additional District and Sessions Court, was concluded by the present 2nd Additional District and Sessions Court Judge, Jagadeesh. After a thorough examination of the evidence and arguments presented, Judge Jagadeesh delivered the judgment on January 19, 2026, finding the accused guilty of the charges and sentencing him to life imprisonment, in addition to the monetary fine of Rs 2 lakh.
