Sources reveal that both the accused were first time offenders. While the officials seized 652 gms of gold valued at Rs 22.82 lakhs from the young passenger hailing from Kumbala, they also seized 319.059 gms of gold, out of 422 gms of substance stashed in the rectum by the other young man from Kasaragod, which was valued at Rs 11.17 lakh. The youth from Kumbala has been remanded in judicial custody for 15 days.
Earlier on 24 July, the customs officials had seized 963 gms of 24-carat gold worth Rs 34.18 lakh from a passenger who also arrived from Dubai onboard Air India Express Flight IX 814- and this too had concealed the gold in paste form in his custom. Due to these smuggling of gold happening frequently, the customs are watching closely on passengers coming from Gulf, which is leading to these detections.
