Potholes becoming Death traps in Udupi

Udupi: 5 deaths due to potholes on the roads in Udupi district have caused anguish to the people. Bengaluru has witnessed 8 deaths due to the potholes on the roads. The district which ranks first in education and healthcare has damaged roads. The damaged roads cause severe inconvenience and daily commuters suffer. The Malpe-Teerthahalli National Highway had claimed the life of a child and case booked against the child’s father was widely criticized by the people.

The Kalsanka-Ambagilu road is full of potholes and cracks. The daily commuters are fearing for their life while commuting on the road in their vehicles. The bike riders are the worst sufferers. 29 manholes on the road are creating hurdles to the vehicles.

Rules are framed for filling potholes and repairing roads. Section 3000 has been formulated for repairing the roads. Debris and other materials should be cleared from the damaged road, the potholes cleaned and the roads should be repaired. The rules formulated are not followed and materials used for filling potholes should fill the pothole area but the guidelines are not followed.

A daily commuter said “I have been travelling to work by bus, I park my vehicle in my house due to potholes. The potholes once repaired re-appear during the rains. A separate road should be constructed instead of filling large potholes. Minor potholes should be repaired immediately. The drainage system should also be strengthened. The concerned authorities should immediately repair the road”.

CMC President Meenakshi Madhav Bannjae said, “I have consulted with the CMC engineer, it is difficult to initiate any patchwork on the road due to rains. I have directed the officials to take up the repair work once the rain subsidies. The repair work will be initiated soon after the rain subsidies.

  1. These photos are pathetic. Ask Shobha Karandlaje or Yeddi why are they ignoring pot holes and busy with other things which should not matter.

  2. Finally, an article is written on potholes on main roads in Udupi – otherwise, it is always Mangalore or Bangalore!

The Udupi Municipality and the MPW personnel are certainly aware of all the bad roads and all the potholes – as they too travel to their respective offices by road. Take, for example, the state of the roads in Manipal and the Bus Station. But nobody took any initiative in spite of highlighting the same by swimming and rolling in the potholes by one sing person who wanted to draw the attention of those in authority not carrying out their responsibility.

All main roads in and around Udupi should actually be concretised with the edges tapered to drain the water so that it does not gather on the concrete, as one can notice on so many badly and poorly executed concretised main roads and bi-lanes in Udupi. The Municipality Engineering Dept. should check the quality of work executed once completed by their Contractor/s – by emptying water to check it gathers or drains out – but this is certainly not carried out – and those bi-lanes which are supposed to be a convenience to the users in place of mud roads, are truly not serving the purpose – at least the mud roads absorb the rainwater!

Well, Udupi CMC and MPW certainly require educated and experienced Engineers and Superiors in road works and infrastructure based on local conditions and rainfall and the drainage required, who will be pro-active and responsible and not wait for such and other articles to draw their attention.
