Roshni Nilaya Celebrates Dr. Olinda Pereira’s Centenary

Mangaluru: The centenary celebrations of the legendary Dr. Olinda Pereira, founder of the School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya, were marked by warmth, gratitude, and an outpouring of tributes from alumni, faculty, and distinguished guests. The event was presided over by Chief Guest Sri Vinay Kumar Sorake, Distinguished Alumnus and Former Urban Development Minister, Government of Karnataka, who spoke passionately about Dr. Pereira’s selfless nature, her dynamic personality, and her enduring vision for social work. He praised the homely and welcoming atmosphere of the Institute and ethos built by Dr. Pereira herself and urged everyone to emulate her humility, willpower, and commitment to social causes. He also highlighted the growing role of social workers in diverse fields, from grassroots activism to political representation.

The gathering was further graced by eminent Guests of Honour Dr. Juliet CJ, Provincial DHM South province, Rev. Fr. Cedric Prakash SJ, noted human rights activist; Prof. Evelyn Benis; Secretary of the Institute of Social Service and Vishwas Trust Prof. Bernadette D’Souza; and Mr. Bhim Rao, former students of Dr. Pereira. Each shared heartfelt reflections and anecdotes that painted a vivid picture of her as a visionary leader, a woman of warmth and hospitality, and a fearless advocate for freedom and education.

Dr. Juliet CJ remembered her evergreen smile and sharp wit, while Rev. Fr. Cedric Prakash recalled her international contributions and courageous spirit. Former student Bhim Rao credited her with inspiring him to establish the Centre for Leadership Development, continuing her legacy of service.

The celebration also featured the release of a special centenary edition of the Adelaide Journal of Social Work by Rev. Fr. Cedric Prakash.

The event concluded with the launch of the Roshni Impact Awards by Mr. Anand D’Silva, President of the Alumni Association, which will recognize pioneering social work initiatives across India, cementing Roshni Nilaya’s place as a national leader in the field. Ms. Lobo of the Vishwas Trust also outlined their dedicated services to the elderly, reflecting the values Dr. Pereira championed.

Prof. Vida Sequeira, President of Institute of Social service welcomed the gathering. A heartfelt vote of thanks by Prof. Evelyn Benis brought the gathering to a close. Dr. Meena Pereira compered the program.
