Rs 200 Crore Bridge cum Barrage to be Constructed across Netravati River – Khader

Mangaluru: “Under the minor irrigation department, a Bridge cum barrage will be constructed at a cost of Rs 200 across the Netravati River. The symbolic foundation laying ceremony will be held on March 21 at 4:00 pm. The construction of the Bridge cum saltwater exclusion dam across the Netravati river near Harekala Village will be the first project in the state. The duration of the project will be 18 months. The length of the bridge will be 520 meters with 57 gates including 5 stop log gates and the size of the gates is 8.5 X 2 Meters. The metal sheets that will be used between the gates will be imported from Holland”, said the former District Minister In-charge U T Khader in a press meet held at the Circuit House here on March 18.

Addressing the mediapersons U T Khader said, “The minor irrigation department is taking up this project for the first time in the state. All hurdles including CRZ regulations have been cleared to begin the construction work. The construction work will begin before the monsoons, the foundation stone will be laid symbolically on March 21 at 4:00 pm. The irrigation minister, MP, MLAs and the district minister in-charge will take part in the foundation stone laying ceremony. The bridge will be 9.5 meters wide with a roadway of 7.5 meters for vehicular movement and with a one-meter footpath on both sides. The gates will operate through an automatic button system. “

U T Khader further said, “For the first time, we are using metal sheets between the gates to stop the saltwater mixing with the river water. The construction of the barrage will help to rejuvenate the groundwater table. Once the project is completed, the district will have enough supply of water throughout the year. At present, during summer there is a scarcity of water in some places.
