Puttur: Thieves broke into the house of Dr Subrahmanya Bhat in Mukrumpady on the outskirts last week and took away Rs 5 lakh worth of gold and silver jewellery and Rs 5,000 in cash.

He and his family had gone to Kerala on April 16 after locking the house. The theft was noticed when they returned on Apr 24. The thieves gained access by breaking the front door open.

Two other houses nearby too were targeted by them. While they went back empty-handed from one of them, they could not make any headway in opening the door of the other.

In all theft cases that have taken place in town, almost all were executed during the owners’ absence. This gives room to a suspicion that a gang has been operating here, which keeps going around during daytime to check how many houses have remained locked for longer periods.

The police have cautioned the public against keeping heavy stock of jewellery at home while leaving town and and have advised the instead to deposit them in bank lockers in their own interest.

The house of Lakshmish Nayak in 34 Nekkilady village was broken into by thieves around the weekend. Nayak had gone with his family to attend a marriage in the close circle.

The theft was noticed when they returned home on Sunday night. One of the windows was found broken open. Gaining access from it, they appeared to have got into the house. Forcing the cupboards and suitcases open, they rummaged the contents and picked up many valuables like gold and cash.

The exact value of the stolen items was yet to be ascertained until late in the night.
