Seven Killed in Bus-Tempo Accident at Manki

Bhatkal: At least 7 people were killed and 25 others seriously injured when a private bus rammed into a tempo at Ananthwadi on NH 66 under Manki Police station limits of Uttara Kannada district during the wee hours of Thursday, May 25.

The deceased have been identified as Bus driver Umesh Valmiki (35), Tempo driver Nagappa Ganigar (46), bride Divya Kurdekar (23), Subramanya (15), Pooja Shet, Palakshi Nagraj Shet (47) and Bebi Sunil Shet (38).

According to sources, The bus was on its way to Belgaum from Mangaluru, the driver lost control of the bus while overtaking another vehicle. The victims killed in the mishap included the bride and three other women, all hailing from Dharwad and Sirsi. The injured have been shifted to Manipal and Kundapur hospitals after initial treatment at the Bhatkal govt hospital.

Youth belonging to the Bhatkal Muslim youth federation rushed to the Bhatkal Govt hospital to help the injured people. Bhatkal DySp Shiv Kumar, Bhatkal CPI Suresh Nayak, Honnavar CPI Kumaraswamy amongst many other police officials visited the hospital and the accident spot to provide help to the injured in the mishap.

The bus driver and two tempo passengers were killed on the spot, 2 injured breathed their last at the Bhatkal Govt hospital while two others died on the way to Manipal.

A case has been registered in the Manki police station.
