State-of-the-Art Cerec-Lab CAD-CAM Installed at Manipal College of Dental Sciences-Mangaluru

Mangaluru: Manipal College of Dental Sciences (MCoDS)-Light House Hill Road, Mangaluru today procured the latest version and state of the Art Cerec –Lab CAD-CAM ( computer-aided design computer-aided manufacture) by DENTSPLY Sirona. This new digital acquisition is the latest highlight in the Institution’s constant commitment and endeavours to be global leaders in dental education and oral health care.

This In lab CAD-CAM procurement includes: inEos X5 an extraoral laboratory scanner to scan conventionally made casts and impressions. This will be used to design virtual prostheses using the CAD software. The Milling Machine MC X 5 mills prosthesis of appropriate materials for approximately 10-15 minutes per Unit. This is then followed by sintering and glazing which gives the final prosthesis that can be cemented by conventional methods.

The Facility was inaugurated by Dr. H S Ballal, Pro-Chancellor, Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Manipal on 4th December 2019 at 9:30 am Medical Education Department, KMC, Light House Hill Road, Mangaluru. Dr Surendra Shetty, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Dr Poornima Baliga, Pro-Vice-Chancellor ( Faculty of Health Sciences), Dr Dilip G Nayak, Dean, Manipal College of Dental Sciences, Mangaluru, Dr Shobha Rodrigues- Professor and HoD of Prosthodontics; and Dr Karthik Shetty- Professor and Hod of Conservative Dentistry also graced the inaugural ceremony.

After the inaugural of the In-Lab CAD-CAM, a formal function was held in the auditorium which began with a prayer invoking God’s blessings, followed by a witty welcome address by “Evergreen Bollywood Dilip Kumar of KMC” the dynamic and energetic Dr Dilip Nayak -the Dean of MCoDS. Briefing on the unique facility, Dr Nayak said, “MCoDS has added yet another feather to its cap by installing this state-of-the-art equipment. The advantages of CAD-CAM is time-saving and increased efficiency in laboratory fabrication, quality control of restorations in terms of fit, durability and predictability which will ultimately benefit our patients and widen the horizons of our postgraduate students. Compared with the conventional methods of prosthesis fabrication, this modern technological advance will provide effective production eventually leading to reduced cost per unit and migration from conventional methods of fabrication towards CAD/CAM design”.

The inaugural of the formal function was done by Dr H S Ballal, by lighting the lamp, along with the same dignitaries who had joined in the inauguration of the In-Lab CAD-CAM. In his inaugural address, Dr H S Ballal said, “My compliments to the “Most Sought After Speaker” and Dynamic Dean of MCoDS Dr Dilip Nayak for taking this dental institution to greater heights under his leadership, and my compliments to the “Bright Lady ” of today’s event Dr Shobha Rodrigues. Even though these days the demand for dental studies is declining, but I feel proud to say that MCoDS is rated as one of the top Dental institutions in India, and the credit should go to Dr Dilip Nayak for his dedication and efforts in taking the institution to greater heights. And now with the addition of In-Lab CAD-CAM, there are very good chances that students will seek admissions into MCoDS”

“Being at KMC-Mangaluru for decades, I and my wife love to come to KMC-Mangaluru from Manipal, for any functions when invited, including this one, because of my long-time association with KMC here. With no doubt, this new equipment will go a long way in precision, and I feel proud to say that MAHE is the trendsetter, giving other institutions to emulate. This equipment is unique and now installed only at MCoDS, which would benefit UG’s and PG’s to gain more knowledge and better experience. And if MCoDS requires any state-of-the-art facilities I am ready to oblige with their requests” added Dr Ballal.

Dr Shobha Rodrigues gave details of the CAD/CAM through power-point presentation. The Official inauguration of the Twitter handle was done by Dr Poornima Baliga, while the Release of “Communique” the E-Newsletter (which is published every three months) of MCoDS was done by Dr V Surendra Shetty. Dr Karthik Shetty delivered the vote of thanks, while Dr Asavari Desai-Associate Professor in Orthodontics compered the programme gracefully and meticulously.
