Strict Model Code of Conduct Enforced in Uttara Kannada – DC Gangubai Maankar
Karwar: The Uttara Kannada Lok Sabha constituency will witness polling on May 7, following the Election Commission’s directives. Uttara Kannada Deputy Commissioner (DC) Gangubai Maankar announced the immediate enforcement of a strict model code of conduct in the district during a press conference at the DC office on Saturday.
Key dates for the Lok Sabha elections in the district include the issuance of a notification on April 12, the last day for nominations on April 19, verification of nominations on April 20, withdrawal of nomination papers by April 22, and voting scheduled for May 7. Vote counting will take place on June 4.
The constituency encompasses 8 assembly constituencies: Kittur, Khanapur, Haliyal, Karwar, Kumta, Bhatkal, Sirsi, and Yellapur. The total number of voters stands at 16,22,857, comprising 8,15,599 men, 8,07,242 women, and 16 other gender voters. A total of 1977 polling booths will be operational, with 25 check posts established across the district to prevent election irregularities. These check posts are manned 24*7 and are equipped with CCTV surveillance.
DC Maankar highlighted the various teams formed to ensure the observance of the model code of conduct, including the Flying Squad, Video Surveillance Team, Video Viewing Team, Data Verification Team, Sector Officers, and Accounting Team. She assured that necessary training and measures have been implemented to avoid any violations of the model code of conduct.
Furthermore, officers have been appointed for key committees such as the Single Window Committee, MCMC Committee, Media Scootney Team, Account Verification Team, and Grievance Management Team.
DC Maankar emphasized the district’s readiness to conduct free, transparent, and peaceful elections, urging the public to utilize the free helpline number 1950 for any election-related queries or reports of model code of conduct violations.
SP Vishnuvardhan of Uttara Kannada mentioned that 2489 police personnel will be on election duty across 1435 polling booths in the district. Additional central security personnel and state police forces will be deployed to ensure a secure polling environment.
Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer Ishwar Kandu discussed plans to enhance voter turnout through sweep activities and increased awareness efforts, especially in areas with historically low turnout. ADC Prakash Rajput also attended the press conference.
