Successful Cytoreductive Surgery with HIPEC Performed at KMC Attavar
Mangalore: In a remarkable milestone for cancer care in coastal Karnataka, the Department of Surgical Oncology at KMC Attavar successfully performed a Cytoreductive Surgery (CRS) followed by Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC) for a patient diagnosed with Pseudomyxoma Peritonei — a rare and challenging peritoneal surface malignancy.

The complex, high-precision surgery was led by Dr. Dishitha Shetty, a Surgical Oncologist, with comprehensive support from a dedicated multidisciplinary team comprising Dr. Malini Mohan, a Medical Oncologist; Dr. Abhishek Krishna, a Radiation Oncologist; and Dr. Akshatha, an Anaesthesiologist. The coordinated efforts of the surgical, anaesthesia, and intensive care teams ensured the procedure was completed successfully and safely.
Pseudomyxoma Peritonei (PMP) is an uncommon condition characterized by the accumulation of mucinous tumors and gelatinous material within the peritoneal cavity, often originating from the appendix or ovary. It causes progressive abdominal distension and can severely affect quality of life if untreated.
Cytoreductive surgery aims to remove all visible tumor deposits from the abdominal cavity. This is followed by HIPEC, in which a heated chemotherapeutic solution is circulated within the abdomen for about 60–90 minutes. The heat enhances the penetration and effectiveness of chemotherapy, destroying microscopic residual tumor cells that remain after surgery.
Dr. Dishitha Shetty explained that this combined approach is one of the most advanced treatment modalities for select peritoneal malignancies such as pseudomyxoma peritonei, peritoneal mesothelioma, and certain cases of ovarian and colorectal cancer. “The procedure requires meticulous surgical precision, careful intraoperative monitoring, and seamless teamwork across multiple specialties. The success of this case underscores KMC Attavar’s capability to deliver advanced oncological surgeries comparable to leading cancer centers,” she added.
This successful surgery represents a significant advancement in regional cancer care, reaffirming KMC Attavar’s position as a center of excellence in comprehensive oncology. With expertise spanning surgical, medical, and radiation oncology, the institution continues to provide world-class, evidence-based treatment protocols that aim to improve patient outcomes and quality of life.
This achievement reinforces KMC Attavar’s commitment to delivering state-of-the-art oncological care, making it a regional hub for advanced cancer treatment in coastal Karnataka.
