India is a land of Festivals with religious and cultural significance. Each festival is unique with different prayers, rituals , fasting, celebrations and even unique prasadam. All these festivals are related to different pastimes of the Supreme Lord and His associates. Another name of the Lord is Urukrama because he performs wonderful pastimes.

Great Saints down the ages have been glorifying these wonderful pastimes of the Lord . These pastimes guide us to remember the Lord in midst of our day to day busy schedule. Narration of these pastimes also purifies us from material concepts. Mass of people benefit from participating in these festivals organized by temples . Even though people get mercy of the Lord by participating in these festivals ,still deeper message behind these colourful festivals commemorating different pastimes of the Lord remains unknown to the mass of people.

Krishna Janmashtami occupies a unique place amongst the various festivals celebrated in India. The Vedas explain that Krishna means akarshati iti Krishna – He is the all-attractive person and most dear friend of everyone. That’s why Janmashtami, the Appearance Day of Lord Krishna, is one of the most celebrated events all over the World.

In modern times this festival has been spread all over the world by His Divine Grace A.C.Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada , Founder Acharya of International Society of Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON). In 1966 ISKCON began in New York in a storefront and now it is spread practically in every city in the world.

ISKCON’s Founder-Acharya A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada taught that the path to happiness is not found in material pursuits, but in simple living, high thinking, and in awakening love of God—Lord Krishna. Over the last 53 years, ISKCON has grown into an international community with more than 1000 temples, 100 vegetarian restaurants, and 516 million books in print in 87 different languages.

“It is due to Srila Prabhupada that the bhakti siddhanta advocated by Sri Madhvacharya reached an international level.” said His Holiness Sri Sri Vishwesha Tirtha Swamiji of Paryaya Sri Pejavara Adhokshaja Matha, Udupi recently. Swamiji said, “Srila Prabhupada holds the credit for spreading the philosophy of devotion to Sri Krishna along with a revolution in moral living all over the world.”

ISKCON is rooted in the Gaudiya Vaishnava sampradaya. It teaches that the soul is eternal and different from the body and is part and parcel of Krishna who is the origin of everything ( janmady ady yasyayatah). Suffering of humanity is due to forgetfulness of our eternal relationship with Krishna. This relation with Krishna can be revived by chanting of Krishna’s names, or mantra meditation of ‘Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare’ .
