UAE: Gulf Medical University Holds 7th Annual Scientific Meeting

UAE: Gulf Medical University (GMU), the leading private medical university in the region owned and operated by Thumbay Group UAE, conducted the 7th Annual Scientific Meeting at its campus in Ajman on 4th and 5th November, 2015. The theme for this year’s meeting was ‘Enhancing Healthcare Delivery Optimizing the Last Mile’’.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, GMU Provost Prof. Gita Ashok Raj said that the Annual Scientific Meeting was being conducted every year to coincide with the date of founding of GMU, 5th November 1998. She described the two-day annual event as one of the significant steps taken to transform GMU into a research and innovation based university. “Every year, we see that more and more students are taking up research activities. The interest and enthusiasm among the students for engaging in research has been very encouraging. With the establishment of the Centre for Advanced Biomedical Research and Innovation (CABRI) in GMU, our research initiatives and programs have received a major boost,” she said. She added that the Annual Scientific Meeting was instrumental in fostering both inter-disciplinary and intra-disciplinary interactions, which was beneficial to research in the long run.

Dr P K Menon, Director of CABRI, explained the theme, format and objectives of the Annual Scientific Meeting, in his speech at the opening ceremony. He stressed that the program sought to inspire future studies and enhance research in the medical field. Explaining the achievements of CABRI since its inception, Dr Menon outlined the new super specialty tests, accreditations, tie-ups with foreign universities, research grants/projects and submitted projects of CABRI. He said that the part-time clinical research opportunities provided by CABRI to GMU students was proving very beneficial. He added that CABRI’s part-time clinical research program had started attracting bright students from other universities as well, as many of them were impressed by its excellent facilities.

The 7th Annual Scientific Meeting had oral as well as poster presentations by GMU faculty and students. A wide range of topics were covered under three main categories: Biomedical Sciences & Clinical Practice, Dental Sciences & Practice and Pharmaceutical Sciences & Clinical Pharmacy. Prizes and certificates were awarded to faculty members and students for the oral and poster presentations.
