Unique Minimal Invasive Pediatric Surgery Performed at KMC Hospital Attavar
Mangaluru: KMC hospital, Attavara, conducted its first Vesicoscopic surgery in children by Pediatric surgeons Dr Sadashiva Rao, Dr Jayateertha Joshi & team making it one of the first hospitals in Coastal Karnataka to do this complicated surgery.
Case Description:
A four-year-old girl from the northern part of Karnataka presented with recurrent urine infections. She was evaluated and found to have a condition called as vesicoureteral reflux. Normally urine form kidney flows to the urinary bladder through pipes called as ureters. In this condition, urine flows back from the bladder to kidneys through the ureters. Children with this type of condition suffer from recurrent urine infection; failure to gain weight, high blood pressure and sometimes if not treated timely leads to kidney failure. She was admitted two weeks back with episode severe urine infection and treated promptly with antibiotics. After controlling the infection, unique surgery was performed to treat this condition- vesicoureteral reflux. Conventionally this surgery would be performed by opening the bladder and reconnecting the ureters to the bladder in such a way that, urine re-flux to kidney will be prevented.
At KMC hospital Attavar, Pediatric surgeons Dr Sadashiva Rao and Dr Jayatheertha Joshi performed surgery called as ‘Vesicoscopic surgery’ in which small holes (ports) made in the urinary bladder, with help of video camera similar to laparoscopy, small instruments passed through the ports to complete the surgery. Anaesthetist Dr Neetha said that the baby tolerated the procedure well and the baby started feeds on the same day of surgery.
On the fourth day of surgery the child was discharged from the hospital; which otherwise by conventional surgery would take a week of hospital stay.
In this type of surgery, big scars on the abdomen will be prevented without compromising the principle of surgery Dr Joshi said.
