Workshop on ‘Dialysis Demystified’ Enlightens and Engages at FMCOAHS

Mangaluru: The Department of Renal Dialysis Technology, Father Muller College of Allied Health Sciences (FMCOAHS), organized a one-day workshop titled “Dialysis Demystified – Simplifying Science and Enhancing Practice” on 25th June 2025 in collaboration with the Karnataka Allied and Healthcare Professionals Association. The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from students and professionals, blending innovation, education, and practice into an engaging day of learning.

The day commenced at 8:00 AM with a model exhibition competition, where students displayed creative working models related to renal dialysis. The exhibits were evaluated by a panel of distinguished judges – Dr Hilda D’Souza, Principal, FMCOAHS; Dr Manjunath J, Professor and HOD of Nephrology, FMMC; and Dr Amith Leon D’Souza, Professor, Dept. of Nephrology, FMMC.

The inaugural programme, compered by Ms Arpitha, a second-year student of the department, began at 9:30 AM with a soulful prayer song by first and second-year students. Ms Lavita Shanya, In-Charge Course Coordinator and Lecturer, delivered the welcome address. A unique kidney-shaped model served as the ribbon-cutting symbol, ceremoniously inaugurated by the dignitaries and a student representative, setting a symbolic tone to the event.

Prizes were awarded in two model categories:

• Best Class-wise Still Model related to renal dialysis
• Team-wise Working Models (3 awards among 6 teams) on Hemodialysis machines

The awards were distributed by the dignitaries, followed by a presidential address from Dr Hilda D’Souza, who commended the students for their innovation and the department for its commitment to excellence in education and clinical training.

Ms Surya Gayathri M, Lecturer in the department, delivered the vote of thanks, and the event concluded with the Institutional Anthem. High tea was served to guests and participants.

The academic session commenced at 10:45 AM, with Dr Manjunath J delivering an insightful talk on “A Simplified Approach to Calculating Kt/V in Dialysis – A Guide to Assessing Dialysis Adequacy.” Dr Essar Khan, Senior Resident, FMMC, added depth with clinical insights, enriching the participants’ understanding of dialysis efficiency metrics.

A defining feature of the event was the personal touch added by the department—handcrafted badges, food coupons, decorative elements, and thank-you cards—all thoughtfully prepared by the students and faculty, reflecting a deep sense of ownership and creativity.

The workshop truly lived up to its title, demystifying dialysis through engaging formats, expert insights, and student-led innovation, embodying FMCOAHS’s vision of integrating science with compassionate care.
