  • From Max and Jessie Rasquinha on Concentrate on Old Port and Fishing to Qualify for Smart City - Lobo

To be qualified as forerunners of a Smart City, Mangalore has a long way to go, and the ultimate road to success is guaranteed because Mangalore has all the potentials to be one of the “Smart Cities” of the future. The Educational strength of Mangalore and all the existing infra-structure needs a further glimpse of not only the port but many other spectrums that involve our future focus on Advanced Educational strength, our focus on cottage industries, our focus on Travel and Tourism, and most importantly all the support services that go along with the IT services. Expansion on our current Museums, Libraries, Performing Art Centers, Community Developments and Cultural Enhancements – these are all some of the major criterias that will become part and portion of the considerations to be qualified for “Smart City”. Our dependency on the Intellectual growth on the basis of all our existing strength of Scholars that prevail in different Schools, Colleges and Universities and their contribution towards the “Smart City” concept is also equally valuable. Our future concentration on roadways, transportation mobility, communication as well as Environment is all part of the long and extensive shopping list that need be addressed at the grass root level in order to prove to all others where, when and how Mangalore can be qualified to be a “Smart City”. The sooner we concentrate on all of the above will be better for our Economic, Social as well as Educational growth in and around Mangalore. Best of luck.

It’s truly sad that the only Zoo in Mangalore, does not get any kind of financial support from the Karnataka Government. On top of it the leaders of the Karnataka Government and other MLA.s and MLC’s give big talks on Tourism in Mangalore and Udupi, etc., and do nothing thereafter! Even at the only Park/Garden in Ajjarkad , private doners/sponsors install benches, etc. Even bus shelters are privately constructed by doners/sponsors.

  • From Max and Jessie Rasquinha on Major Gas Tanker Mishap Averted at Pumpwell

Roads in Mangalore are narrow. Population is increasing by the day. Traffic is doubling everywhere. The situation is not getting better, but it will get worse due to curcumstances beyond anyone’s control. All that we as elected and selected officials responsible for people’s safety in travel have to look into all precautions in safeguarding the interest of the people – our best guarded secret of India. We have to allocate a good chunk of our burdget for the betterment of the people. In turn, people have to pay legitimate taxes, and it is obvious. Huge LPG Tankers or any other major loads should be restricted to move into the City areas only during the non-peak hours so that these huge vehicles do not get hindered with heavy traffic. Look into all the precautions well before hand so that people’s safety and security is well maintained at all times and under all circumstances. Thank you.

  • From Max and Jessie Rasquinha on Important News on Railways : Take Note!

Mode of Railway Transportation within India should be expanded as much as possible for the movement of ever-increasing people in India. Railway travel, all over the world, is the cheapest mode of transport. It is convenient for all purposes, and saves lot of road congestion and also benefits the public transportation. We have travelled extensively in U.S.A., Canada, Europe and even Australia, and the transportation by railway has been the most favorite of our travels. The trains are equally comfortable and well scheduled, and trains are equally scenic and safe too. Kindly therefore expand the railway systems as extensively as you can. Let people benefit from the safe and comfortable and economic travel. Give the people the very best because the people place their confidence in you in all their safe and convenient mode of travels.

  • From Horny Manatee on SSLC results announced; girls, Bengaluru rural on top

I simply refuse to buy this nonsense. It is an established fact that majority of the students churned out by our education system are unemployable. So something quite doesn’t sound right. Almost every school appears to score near cent percent results in the board exams these days. Friends and relatives boast about their children having scored 97.889943242343 in the exams. And this happens year after year but we hardly produce any exceptional talent to make sense of this “outstanding” achievement. If this has been happening in the last 10-15 years then at least some of us should have owned patents or won international awards. The numbers don’t make sense. Forget everything but how do you explain someone scoring 625/625? Obviously you can never score full marks in language subjects? May be our Indian education system hasn’t kept up with the standards elsewhere. Everyone starts tuitions 2 years before the final exam and majority of the students resort of rote-learning techniques. You can not really have any intelligent conversation with these people. May be our education system is gradually dumbing down. Everyone scores top marks and everyone is happy. What’s not to like? But one has to ask, does it really serve any purpose at the end of the day? I am fairly sure if the exam board replaces 50% of the exam paper with some form of aptitude test then majority of these students are going to flunk big time. People should remember, employers are not really keen on marks cards. They mainly look for aptitude and the ability to do the work.

Its the poor quality management by our so called people in power. I still remember the case wherein our illiterate politicians went on a France tour to study the method to stop sea erosion. Mind you it was a tour without any Engineers involved. No report was submitted nor anything done to stop the erosion. All that was done was waste of public money on this expensive trip. Dear Politicians, Stop making money and concentrate on the well being of the people for which you have appointed. Plan the roads so that they can withstand any weather for at least 10 years. Few of the things that we need for the Mangalorean roads are : Footpath for pedestrians Pedestrian crossing only on designated areas such as zebra crossing or over bridge Road marking to have the vehicle running smoothly Good Drianage system Follow lane system Strict on spot fine for traffic violators. Seizing of License incase the fines are not paid. The Fines should be utilized for infrastructure works Separate service path or a space for bus stops No stopping of buses other than the bus stops Awarding the contract to very good contractors Consultant to keep a check on the quality of the roads I hope to see beautiful India once again.

Siddu is worried now…. Our cops do everything to protect law & order and to protect the public and property. But what do they get in turn from the govt ? Are their services not recognised ? Do they need to beg for a better life and hike in pay ?? These politicians only want to fill their pockets. Now that the entire police force going on mass leave will shake down the whole state, which shall surely be a big issue. Siddu is well aware that he shall not be able to handle this problem and hence is using threats. Need to wait and see what happens on 4th June.

Slight showers in Mangalore lasting for few hours must have flooded the place. Its strange that uncertainty in rain can cause so many havocs in our daily life where the normal monsoons are a “must” for all practical purposes including the farming activity, water supply stability and much more. Hopefully God will hear our prayers and that the Monsoon season will help us to carry on with our normal life in and around Mangalore.

May (imaginary) God bless them!! Indian urban areas are full of stray dogs and cats. There is a need for some kind of regulation so pet owners don’t end up dumping puppies and kittens in open streets. Also, I encourage people to think beyond just pets. For every animal you see on the street, there are thousands who get dragged into shady buildings and slaughtered for ‘naalige chapala’. Cut down on your meat eating habits. If possible, switch to vegetarian diet and stop participating in animal holocaust.

WOW – this is fascinating for more than one reason!! Look at the open admission of inside business dealings and an open threat to not issue ticket in next assembly election!! How come journalists (not the fake ones) are not lining up at Congress party headquarters to get a clarification on CM’s comments? What kind of ‘help’ Mr.Bava was seeking from Congress party for his family business? Is it not a clear case of political party and its elected members rigging the system with unfair advantages? This kind of open admission and threat should make it to national headlines. Then again, it requires true journalists, not just stenographers. Now, can you imagine the level of outrage from media and ‘beef club’ members if this was a BJP govt? What a sad state of Indian politics and journalism!!!

A very brave attempt and a noble act from Ms. Violet Pereira. Salute to Mangalorean.com for covering the transgender story. More and more people, social organizations, religious institutions, government should ponder over such important issues and do something humane and fight against such discrimination to protect their legal rights. If this cannot be understood in this century also, when can we understand. Laws should make the parents who reject their own children punishable. Hearing their story, many have completed primary, elementary education and even graduation also. But the common problem that they face is, the society doesn’t accept them. Some times I feel like we humans are worst than animals. I think as individuals it will be difficult to find solutions to their miseries, but as organizations people can definitely think of some solution to comfort them and change this social stigma.

We used to watch the agricultural activities during our school days. it was in the early nineties that changes started in Mangalore at a dizzy pace. The greed of few over took the health of the city. • From Arun on Decline in Farming : These Scenes Will Vanish Soon

With due respect to that reader who settled in the city, he must realize that he is the reason why we see this situation. We want to move to the cities and expect others to the hard work. The pictures look great but do we realise the hardships involved. I remember my younger days when all a woman toiling hard to transplant paddy would get was 2 measures (2kilos) of paddy( not rice). A day’s wage for the men was less than rs.5/. No work would mean no food for the family. The dreaded day’s of Aati would mean no work, a majority of DK had to survive only on jackfruit. How many of us remember this? I think we are better of with our concrete jungles. Let us hang those beautiful pictures as we remember the hardships suffered by our ancestors.

It is sad that cricket-crazy fans are not able to realize that these T20 matches are a big tamasha or, at best, freestyle wrestling matches and they are being taken for a ride and there are members of the mafia, who are linining the pockets, viz. politicians, professors, corporate heads, etc. They have united for a common purpose. It is high time that the Supreme Court comes down heavily on BCCI, IPL, etc. and completely streamlines the system and sees that they are headed by ex-cricketers of repute (and not opportunists, who thrive by blending into a corrupt system) and advised by professional financial experts on investments, spendings and promotion of not only cricket, but other international sports. Cricket is a sport that is not internationally known and please tell me how many people in different countries of the world have heard of Virat Kohli? He has been heard of only in a few cricket-playing countries. When Maria Sharapova was asked at Wimbledon, if she had heard heard about Sachin Tendulkar, she replied in the negative? This offended his diehard fans and some drowned their sorrows by gulping booze. How sad? These people are only known in the cricket playing countries and in India they are treated as gods. Otherwise, they are mere mortals who like to put on airs.

The rare combination of surfing and spirituality! The world needs more of such organisations or clubs that promote the right way of living to the younger generation. Such opportunities, if given at a young age, will definitely help them realise the futility of the artificial ‘party’ culture that prevails and choose the healthy and better way of living without missing out on the fun too! I’m extremely glad that I introduced my daughter to this surfing lifestyle at the right time. • From Original R.Pai on Is Technology playing Havoc with Relationships?

There is nothing wrong with technology. They enrich our life and make us more efficient. There are always going to be people who abuse the technology and different tools it offers. Ignoring safety rules is really a stupid thing to do. In long run, Darwin’s law of survival takes care of many of these idiots who ignore their own safety! As to human relationships, things will continue to change. There was a time when undivided families were common. Women didn’t work – they took care of kids and family. You hardly see such families these days. I have a feeling that human relationships will enter entirely a new dimension when virtual reality(VR) and artificial intelligenc(AI) become a reality. Many of the human relationships that we see today may not exist in post-AI, post-VR societies. For example, pregnancy may be a thing of past when women refuse to go through 9 month-long ordeal and let human-like robots do the job. Ever since Greek-Roman philosophers, we have always been afraid of changes and tried to blame younger generation for moving away from traditional ways. As it turned out, it was an unfounded fear that is built into human DNA. As long human race has a survival streak, we will continue to thrive and progress.

  • From Jay on Why Hate Muslims because of ISIS or Terrorists?

I have seen Fareed Zakaria’s “Why they hate us”, his two guests Irshad Manji and Reza Aslan were sugar coating the pill with half truths. The say that the Islamic State has nothing to do with Islam, perhaps it has something to do with Buddhism, are you kidding me? Never hate Muslims, instead love them I fully agree with you that we should not hate Muslims. The problem is not Muslims, Muslims are people, they have their good and bad, their ups and downs just like every body else, but the problem is the ideology of Jihad, Conquest and subjugating people and collecting the Jiziya which could go up to 50% of your income. Islam gives the people of the book (Jews & Christians) in particular three choices, but the people of all other faiths – convert or die. 1. Convert to Islam and pay 2.5% as Zakat. 2. Do not convert to Islam, just pay them Jaziya. 3. If you don’t convert to Islam and do not pay Jaziya, then just get rid of them. This ideology has left millions of people dead as the fighting has raged around the world for 1400 years and shows no sign of stopping, in fact it is getting worse. So the most important point is – The problem the whole world is facing is Islam (an ideology), and not Muslims (who are people)

Jesus said “Look, I am sending you out like sheep among wolves; therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves.” He did not say go to the slaughter like sheep. This article ignores the long history of Muslim maltreatment and mistreatment of non- muslims. How many muslim countries treat non-muslims as equal citizens? The article does not say what percentage of South Kanara Muslims want Sharia in South Kanara. It does not discuss the fact that many Muslims regard democracy as illegitimate because it is not sanctioned in the Koran. It is dangerous to let problems fester until they explode into tension and violence.

Sir, avoiding communal violence does not polarise the Hindus. If Hindus are not polarised and their votes are shared by many parties, the Hindutva political outfits wont win elections. So, let us provoke Muslims, thereby compel them to react. Their reaction would consolidate votes of Hindus, to mindlessly support BJP. So even if ISIS flutters its flag along with the Pakistan flag every day in Kashmir, it does not matter. What we want is victory to BJP even at the cost of insult to India and danger to Hinduism! • From Original R.Pai on Why Hate Muslims because of ISIS or Terrorists?

Ideas have consequences and we should be able to criticize bad ideas. Criticizing Islam shouldn’t be seen as attacks on Muslims. Islam is an idea and Muslims are people like you and me. When we criticize American foreign policies or Catholic child abuse scandal, we are not attacking Americans or Catholics, right? It’s very important to keep this distinction in mind when we talk about these issues. Religious ideas profoundly impact people and thereby societies. It would be very naive to ignore this reality. We all know about thousand years of darkness in Europe due to religious extremism and authoritarian rule. We also know the religious impact in Easter societies like India, China and Japan. We can trace back many of our social issues back to our religious beliefs and values. See how ‘jaati’ system still plays a dominant role in our personal lives to political calculations in India!!! We can only blame sanaathana dharma for this mess!! There is no point in living in denial. If Hinduism, Christianity, Budhism, Shintoism and every other religion is a fair game, why not Islam? There is an unhealthy tendency in our media to avoid discussing about Islam and muslims. I have seen it from our own vimaana nildaana cases to terrorism. I sincerely hope that this is not a case of soft bigotry of low expectations as comedian Bill Maher puts it!! If we are truly honest about the issue of terrorism, we need to look at the link between violence and religious ideas. We need to see why democracy and individual freedom don’t exist in certain societies while other societies are more open to these humanist values. We need to ask ourselves why even educated people from a specific community living in western societies endorse violence when it comes to blasphemy, apostasy and other religious issues!! Don’t have to believe me – read some of the reliable poll results!! Again, remember – this is not about people, this is all about ideas. Not all ideas are equally good or bad. Not all religions are same. This is like saying chess is same as kickboxing!!! I suggest a few authors and thinkers for those who are interested in this topic – Sam Harris, Richard Dawkins, lawrence krauss, Maajid Nawaaz, Pervez Hoodbhoy, Tarek Fatah, Irshad Manji etc. Especially, look up Pervez Hoodbhoy who still lives in Pakistan and listen to his views on religion/science and sad state of Pakistan due to religious influence. Finally, author has compared Christian atheists to ISIS and terrorists. As someone who holds a great deal of respect for European scientific innovation and contribution over centuries by so called ‘atheists’, let me take this opportunity to register a protest in their support. We wouldn’t be where we are today without those ‘atheists’ questioning religious dogma and discovering laws of nature.

  • From Original R.Pai on Airline Apologizes to Passenger over Flight Cancellation

I agree with this young man. While we all understand the technical challenges the airlines may run into, they also have an obligation to inform passengers in advance and minimize the pain. This reminds me of a similar experience with Kingfisher airlines several years ago. After re-booking all passengers to a later flight at 7 pm from mangalooru airport, they decided to cancel it due to technical reasons. By then, most of us had already spent 4-5 hours waiting in airport. The airlines officials had no answer and finally transferred me to a Jet Airways flight – I ended up missing my connecting flight to Germany and spent a day in Bengaluru watching people while eating masaala dosa and idli/sambaar!!!

Regulatory authority with rules that give automatic fines to airline for every cancellation will be effective. In other countries it is the norm. Airlines would then try to arrange for an alternative plan. Most of the woes we face in India are because of inadequate regulations. The authorities are always few steps behind the peoples needs. Airlines(Industry) finds it more easy to pay the authorities( corruption, bribes) to keep the regulations in its favor.

Good initiative but it would not bear any fruits. Me too being very principled person, have taken up such issues in the past with the private airlines. Even at a time I have taken up in consumer court and news papers, but yet the airline is shameless and they take out their hidden rules. They are always right and we passengers have no rights to voice out. This happens only in india other than aboard. The reason for such attitude by the airline is due to the rules we have in our country, which gives more upper hand to the airline, while the passenger at the end suffers.

In India every issue generates a lot of heat but little insight. There are few facts and little information on the major problems faced by the country. Colleges and universities are not fulfilling their function as knowledge creators. South Kanara has many colleges and universities but not one of them produces an economic forecast for the region. In the US almost every university with a business/economics department produces an economic forecast for its region which analyzes the major industries in the region, the number of employees working in the industries, the impact of the industries on the regional economy etc.

  • From Henry James on The Aircrash and after: Lest We Forget...

Air travel is a complex logistical operation involving man, machinery and technology. With the amount of technology and sophistication available today, it’s almost entirely safe to travel in an aircraft. The only unresolved piece of the puzzle is the role the humans play (mainly the pilots). A majority of the air disasters today can be squarely attributed to human errors. Most of the pilots today are more of glorified software operators. They fly less and press buttons more, relying on the machines to do the job. While this certainly is acceptable, the pilots today are increasingly losing touch with the fundamentals of flying as can be seen from the various accident investigation reports. The machine can not be fully relied upon every time and at that time (for example when the auto pilot automatically disengages for any reason) the pilots should be in a position to fully take over without panicking. Just look at Air France 447 disaster. They did not even use common sense in the crucial moments of that flight. The investigation report on the IX 812 disaster, which came out after a couple of years, clearly evidenced the pilot snoring for almost the entire duration of the flight. We can split hair all day and blame many internal and external factors but at the end of the day the flight crew inside the cockpit have to take full responsibility for the safety of the passengers. There can be absolutely no compromise under any circumstances made on this requirement. I have read reports later that the captain was overworked at that time and that, in my view, made all the difference. His exhaustion made him sleep till the last few minutes before landing. Mentally, he wasn’t fully prepared for landing as he had just woken up. The landing alignment overran the acceptable runway limits and this led to the confusion between the 2 pilots as to whether to stop the aircraft by a screeching halt or to touch-and-go for another landing attempt. If the captain wasn’t sleeping during the course of the flight, this landing misalignment would never have happened. If the captain was exhausted from overwork, he should have plainly declined to fly that night. Why did he not have the courage or conviction to refuse when he was playing with hundreds of peoples’ lives? They died a horrible death for a silly cockpit error. What about the pain and grief caused to those victims’ family members? Both the captains, by the looks of it, were highly experienced. But when they started their final descent did they not have enough brain to play safe and go round because they were fully aware they will be overshooting the runway? What kind of arrogance was that? I acknowledge it is easy for us to pass judgements while we are here on the ground which is so different from people who end up in that spot of predicament thousands of feet above. During those circumstances every second counts and every wrong decision can have disastrous consequences, as we have seen in this case. But they are called pilots for a reason. They are part of a profession which demands to be highly skilled and dedicated. That’s why not every TDH can become a pilot. It takes years and years of hard work to become a fully qualified pilot. Therefore it is my view that if it’s not a mechanical failure or not a navigation error caused by ATC then pilots have to take full responsibility for the disasters. Every other reason such as short runway, hill top etc. becomes secondary.

  • From Original R.Pai on Bandh Successful! But Did We Gain Anything?

Even though I oppose the idea of ‘Bandh’, i fully understand why it has become popular in a society where we have failed to hold our govt officials and elected leaders accountable. Most of the blame should go to media who are supposed to educate and inform public. Instead, they are busy with selective outrage and hiding stories that are not convenient to certain groups. Take the example of Netraavati controversy – How many journalists have confronted our political leaders (especially Veerappa Moily and Sadaanada Gowda) and asked for a clear explanation and plan? How many journalists have visited the Yettinahole and reported on the work that is going on? How many reports have you seen detailing how this project will impact agriculture and fishing in area stretching from Uppinangady to Farangipete ? Who is interviewing Dakshina kannada leaders (especially from mangalooru-puttooru-bantwaala area) to find out what their plan is to address the water crisis if and when yettinahole project is implemented? Media needs to do a better job of reporting facts and educating public on the issue. Again, to be clear – I fully reject the idea of ‘Bandh’ as it is a direct violation of our rights. Bandh should be illegal and those who call for Bandh should face lawsuit and huge penalty in crores!! However, it won’t happen as long as Govt and media fail to see and acknowledge reality.

  • From Melroy on Bandh Successful! But Did We Gain Anything?

I fully agree with the entire article. I have been greatly inconvenienced by these forceful bandhs as against “voluntary” involvement in a strike. The Munims (administrators of the Zamindari system) who issue ultimatums , sitting behind their protected closets, were not even seen or heard, while the common working –class- law- abiding citizenry did not even have public transport or access to shops to buy their food items(that includes drinking water for those who did not even have the luxury of getting 2 pots of potable water!). The irresponsible government, administration and police are to blame for the agony and losses incurred by hard working law abiding citizens during the bandhs. How will these citizens be reimbursed? In what way was this bandh peaceful ?????????; when a bus was stoned and car was burnt(as per news reports) while we had the paper tiger administrators and contingents of police service (“tigers” and “police-force” for ordinary un-influential people but “paper tigers” and “police service”, for influential people) benignly and charitably looking on at protestors sitting on the road blocking the traffic??! What right do they have to block the traffic if they are peacefully protesting???! As you have correctly mentioned a “fear psychosis” exists among the ordinary people. Because they know that the administration stands with its hands firmly clasped behind it’s back waiting to pass the buck onto someone else(usually the common man). As you have correctly mentioned a “fear psychosis” exists among people when certain specific rowdy groups/political parties call for a bandh. People know that the police and administration will just look the other way and not protect them. Had a group of ordinary citizens called for a strike to protect their liberty and freedoms and had they made the folly of requesting shopkeepers and public transport to shut down for the day, then they would have been unceremoniously rounded up and imprisoned, no questions asked, by the very same administrators and magistrates. But when a group of ruffians and goons call for a bandh, with the blessings of their political god-fathers , then the paper tigers are not seen implementing their own “Firmans” .And, the all permeating fear psychosis, created by these goons, causes people to shut down their shops and establishments and the ordinary citizen loses a day of his wages and worse of all sick patients are left to die. What happened during the Prashant Poojary “peaceful and voluntary” bandh called for by a mob of violence prone people? Shop-window glasses were broken, bus front windscreen glasses were broken, even KSRTC buses plying toward Dharmastala were not spared and KSRTC drivers skipped going through Moodbidri in fear for their lives! Did the government reimburse the shopkeepers and the bus owners? The people who milked the situation were the “card and flag carrying” Sanghas of rickshaw owners and private vehicles owing their allegiance to the “Mob” and this went on for 3 days! The Mob ran the town for 3 days while the paper tiger administrators did nothing to protect ordinary helpless citizens who had to shell out 10 times the cost for travel due to unavailability of public transport! Later the same mob of gangsters, who had held the entire town to ransom, issued a press statement that the bandh was “entirely voluntary” and that they had no hand in forcing the bandh down unwilling peoples’ throats! The entire charade of the “Yet –Another –Hole” project related bandh was organized and sponsored by immoral, corrupt and unethical politicians, in- power and out- of -power, who play the game of “Russian roulette” using ordinary citizens as guinea pigs while they fatten their pockets and multiply their assets ,sharing the spoils among themselves, leaving the “unsmartened” citizens of the “smart” cities with no ground under their feet to stand on. The Munims(administrators ) of the Zamindars(elected representatives who only end up representing their self-interests), who in normal course roar at ordinary citizens treating them with disdain, contempt and disrespect, do not dare to even utter a whimper at the thugs who owe allegiance to the Zamindars. Yes, we live in a Banana Republic and the citizens who vote for the Ammas, Annas, Appas, Bhagyas, Didis, Bhaiyyas, Bhais and Behens deserve the lack of good governance, transparency ,accountability, safety and security in lieu for some mere crumbs thrown at them from the left-overs of these politicians(the bad and rotten ones). If anybody thought that this bandh will increase the ground water levels for them to get their daily 2 pots of water then they are day- dreaming and need to get a reality check done. They need to search for and read the UN reports on impending water shortages in the world, then they need to search for and find the solutions to this impending shortage and then they will realize how the corrupt politicians are simply wasting our time by misleading us as to where the real problem lies while they(the corrupt politicians) are creating corporations to rake in the moolah- out of the manufacture and supply of potable water to the thirsting “still unsmartened citi –zens”!

I was very touched by this article. Thanks for bringing this very moving story to your readers. Perhaps, you could write about lepers, the homeless, the elderly, in short the vulnerable and the oppressed this will bring awareness and a change of attitude towards the marginalised. When I look back I deeply regret the discrimination, the pain, sorrow and agony of being a transgender and an overwhelming majority of people turned a blind eye to their suffering. I feel that the government should enact laws that protect our fellow human beings. The government should give free university education, and to take up professional courses so that these people find respectable jobs and can then lead normal lives. Education is the best way to get the income they need and to stop them from begging, or allowing their bodies to be abused.

In response to AAlva’s comment posted above, I do want to clarify my point- Like I have already mentioned in both my articles that I do support the fight on the Yettinahole issue, but having a bandh would not make any difference and solve the issue. Bandh will create more loses and also put travelers coming to city into lots of inconveniences-with no shops open these travelers will be looking for food and especially water. What do you have to say about this? Let our leaders and members of Samithis come up with a better ideas to fight against this issue, rather than go for a senseless bandh. With one day bandh there is nothing we gained. Waste of time , and waste of revenue. Period.

Hello Alphie, If at all you have carried water pots and struggled for water in the past 1-2 months, you too would have felt that the bundh was justified. If at all the elected representative had listened to the people of Dakshina Kannada and tried to stop the Yettinahole Project, today NRSS didn’t have to get to the streets to protest and call for a bundh. Have you seen any Mangalorean’s carrying potted water or struggling for water in any recent years if not the past 60 yrs as told by elders, at least in the past 10-20 yrs. If you are the person who has gone thro the pain of running for water, you too would have supported the bundh. At least once do visit the site where Yettinahole Project is getting implemented then you will know the seriousness of the effect of the project implementation which will have on our district, the rivers which will get affected and how it will create the ecological imbalance to the nature.

Such bandhs will only harm us, our state and the nation. Why do we need leaders who are digging our graves? We need to follow successful countries and their ways of dealing such situations. • From Lawrence on Neither Here, Nor There-Pathetic State of Transgenders

Transgenders are God’s creation and they are deserved to be treated fairly and respectfully just like any other male and female. It is unfortunate that neither the government nor the society understand their feelings. There is an another category of gays and lesbians. They too born with biological defects and Indian society has failed to understand that. A couple of Supreme Court Judges dictate morality saying how gays/lesbians should live their lives, without seeking expert scientific opinion on their biological conditions before passing their judgement. Scientists have concluded that homosexuality is not by choice but a condition that an individual is born with. It is a defect in God’s creations, if one can say so, but unfortunately, we cannot refurbish them. During the medieval age, people used to throw stones at Lepers and keep them out of the town. Fifty years back, when I was a kid, I used to throw stones at mad/crazy man along with my classmate. No one corrected me then. Now I regret my act. Over the years people are civilized and accepted them as it is not their fault. I hope the society and elite class of politician and judges will accept the TG and Gays/Lesbians as equal to other citizens as we become more civilized.

Hope people of the district will continue to fight for the preservation the environment. Netravati diversion must be stopped. Its because of mother nature’s fury that our dear Mangalur is suffering from this extreme water shortage. It makes me very sad just to think that how a city which had abundant water supply , now resembles the cities which are prone to water shortage frequently like Bidar, Kalaburgi etc. How man can destroy the nature and reap its consequences is a lesson in front of us for all of us to learn. One more factor which contributes to the heating up of the city is use of air conditioners which throws out hot air and makes the atmosphere more dry and non conducive to rain. We must voluntarily stop using ACs for the benefit of our future generations and preservation of environment. We must start planting more and more trees, stop wasting rain water. We must voluntarily start rain water harvesting so that at least our future generations will not suffer like us.

Great writing and good coverage by mangalorean.com. After all they too are humans and deserved equal place in our society to lead a normal life. With the public forcing them to sex to urge their desires, this has been a leading cause for rape and murder. If these TG are protected by the law makers, and give equal rights to lead a normal life, then I am sure these TG shall surely protect the society in whatever way they can. Yes, rightly said, “what is their fault for having born as TG” ?? Their parents are to be blamed first, as they are the one who deprieved them from leading a normal life in the society. Had the parents faced the society, today the situation would have been different. In Mumbai it is a custom to offer gifts to TG group while a child is born or during baby shower. This is not with any sympathy, but asking their blessings for a happy life. These TG people are not selfish and they bless each one of the humans being and always pray for others. Hope with this article read by the public, they would now at least respect the TG community and show take towards them. Its time for the society to do some goodness towards this forbidden group.

YOung boy who battled for his life with all the smile on his face is just a memory for all of us. “Gone are the days you did everything with smile for all of us, its our turn to remember and treasure you in our hearts” .. May Savney’s soul rest in peace and may the lord give utmost strength to his family to bear this great loss. I am short of words after reading what this young boy went thru’ this life.

He is not going to do anything meaningful which will safeguard the interests of Mangalore for the present and future. After all, 13000 crores is at stake, and people are waiting in the sidelines to gobble it. The general public should actively take to rain water harvesting to avoid misery in the future. Do it yourself, be the change that you want to see, that’s the message. What we have seen this year this summer is just the trailer. Full picture ab bhi baki hai. I cant understand how Mr Rai can be called a Forest minister, when he is doing just the opposite i.e. actively encouraging deforestation through disastrous projects. And the project opponents are not helping matters either by not attending the meetings. Wonder what is on their minds!

It was heartening to witness the beautiful memorial service of (late) Rose & Sebastian Vas on the 15th instant. The St. Aloysius College chapel with its beautiful paintings where the Eucharistic Celebration was celebrated was full of piety and devotion to all of us. The homily preached by Fr. Swebert D’silva was enlightening & meaningful. It was delightful to her the gospel reading by Fr. Vincent Crasta, Registrar of Papal Seminary, Pune. The Endowment Lecture by Mr. Gerard Colaco was very useful to the students who are unemployed and are anxious to have a successful career. Marina’s words of wisdom about Rose & Sebastian need to be treasured & appreciated. The function was well organised and the hall was packed to capacity. Kudos to the Organisers. Wishing XET continued success in their work they have undertaken to render service to the cause of neglected and marginalised youth of the community.

Water shortage is a serious crisis in Mangalur. Never in the history as far as I remember this has happened. Our elected representatives be it. MLC/MLA combine or MCC all have failed to foresee the on coming problem although we had scanty rains last season. But people like GEHOON CEO will never realize it because of his jaundice due to his …….. leaning. Not surprising that he needs still lot of time to grow up to discuss serious matters. He will connect shortage of water to unrelated “YUMREEKI VISA” . Hope he will get cured of this phobia of “YUMREEKI VISA” soon !!Getwell soon Gehoon CEO!!

Joker Pinto’s posts are a good reminder of why illiteracy and ignorance are a curse to civilization!! LOL When we are talking about current water crisis in mangaluru, he brings up water shortage scenarios facing certain parts of US in next decade!! Moreover, he thinks that the water shortage in US means same as the water shortage in mangaluru!!! There are areas here which are technically ‘deserts’ but look greener than madikeri!!!! Then again, how do I explain these things to a person whose only exposure to ‘West’ is saying ‘hi’ to random white men in the shopping malls of Saudi Arabia!!! Oh well, let him enjoy his ‘bargaar’ with ‘soce’ near vegetable market and post his infantile world views. We all need a good laugh!!

This is the case of pot calling the kettle black!! Why are we looking at a homicide through the prism of jaati and religion? Does it mean that the murder of one Mr.Baliga matters only to GSB community? The value of an individual is same irrespective of his kula-gotra-jaati-religion – be it bhatta, byaari, porbu or some unknown. Every homicide case should be investigated with the same sense of urgency and respect. The notion that GSBs have somehow a bigger responsibility in this case is very undemocratic, condescending and quite frankly very non-secular. This kind of trivialization by so called secular-progressive groups show how they encourage balkanization of society on the lines of jaati and religion. This is exactly opposite to what they claim to represent!!

People deserve their government. Hartal and strikes should be done for this cause. Intolerance should be for these civic amnities and not against sanskrathi. There is no use in pointing fingers at BJP or Congress when people do not feel anything wrong with these death traps. If they did then things would have been different. My frank opinion is that people are divided based on their religious affiliation, caste language etc . They have other important issues and causes to tackle. We Mangaloreans and Indians in general like the dust I guess. You see lots of dirt and dust being piled up and blowing dust due to wind and vehicles- I think people love it ! Blaming Blacks, Hispanic, arabs and Pope for bad infrastructure ? This shows how joker Praveena Pinto has no knowledge of doddanna even though he tried to get visa 20 yrs ago. I cringe when I see the level of ignorance this guy proudly displays on a regular basis!!!!

Yumreeki Warbler – RampaNNA, I couldn’t find a suitable heading for this topic such as your fav. ‘Sajjige-bajeel’! Hence, this will have to make-do for an illiterate like you. www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3582640/Open-sewers-mildewed-walls-one-toilet-FORTY-people-Shocking-pictures-dirty-dormitories-Apple-s-iPhone-workers-live-like-animals.html So, Mr. Yumreeki Warbler, is the Saudi’s who are manufacturing iPhones? Well, from the past year you have been literally begging us to read your life experiences which somebody ghost-wrote for you. ‘Aadu Jeevitham’ is what you called it. “Yumreeka gave us scientists, philosophers, jokers, actors, politicians, reformers, great presidents, tooth-paste, burgers, french-fries, coke, jokes…” and so on and so forth went on our Yumreeki Warbler some 15 days back. And I tell our Warbler – HOW MANY BACKS DID YOUR WESTERN MASTERS break to achieve it -n IN THIS TIME AND AGE? And THE joker talks about Saudi! Jeez! What an illiterate chump! No wonder that Buffalo Billa keeps whacking him on his boilerplate skull! 🙂 And just forget about those poor blacks and Chinese who died planting your cotton and building railroads and whatnot!

Blaming Blacks, Hispanics, Arabs and (the) Pope for bad infra (some spaces) and a ‘?’ – Namma Kudlada Rampe Ref: “thank (imaimaginery) (sic) God, this took place in a Sanathaaanaaaa Temple.. blah blah….had it been a church, the habitual troublemakers … lah dee dah.. dah dee lah” – Joke submitted by Yumreeki Rampa on theft of 3.5 lakhs from Ishwarmangala temple JUST look at the “had” and your silly twatty assumptions! What a ‘cringeworthy’ chap! Silly fella fled from India to.. hang on.. hang on.. Yumreeka….coz he was starving in India….;; looks like EVEN his Go’s didnt have enough grass/hay to chomp on, let alone chew-the-cud! And never mind the fact that it is a country of my alleged ‘Western masters’! Good one, ya, Rampa. 🙂 Say, did Buffalo Bill(a) approve your decennial leave – for a week? Wanna meet up? We could rope in Dronu Sugam and have some lassi-majjige while you regale me with your US ‘Sajjige-Bajeel’ Yumreeki stories. We could discuss the F-16 sale to a terrorist nation, your low-on-morale navy Seals, NATO, your cat’s neighbors ‘PETO’, your ageing Mridangam (cowhide, of course!), your beloved Saaaamskruutam, Go-mutram, and whatever you like – such as visiting your Murudu statues. We CURE your hallucinations too – about my allegedly ‘rejected’ Yumreeki visa. Daane panpar dhanikle? Raje thikkunda? Billa korpena, ireg? Aanda.. ninna pettha-kanji yaer thooper, Mr. Proj Mgr at 28?

  • From Roy on Asiatic Lion with Liver-Kidney Ailments Dies

What was the treatment recommended by “experts” to cure the lion’s loss of appetite? It is frustrating to read news which does not disclose the information that is most important to the reader.

THANK God this didn’t HAPPEN in the USA. Else, people would have blamed the blacks, Hispanics, Mexicans, Arabs etc. and made the Pope responsible for it. Right, you Yumreeki Warbler, Rampaaaaaaa? 🙂 More such jokes, plz.

When I visit Mangalore I love to have breakfast there. I can’t wait to visit the new location on my next trip to Mangalore. Everyone who work there are very courteous. I wish the very best to the owners. Keep up the great work.

  • From original r.pai on 3 Mangaloreans Freed After 12 yrs in Saudi Jail

‘Riyaaz, Fairooz and Naseer’ report naming three victims of a 7th century legal system. In a true secular – progressive society, the champions of human rights would have come forward to condemn this treatment of supposedly innocent victims. But india is a place where religious bigots from minority groups pretend to be secular only to attract RSS. So don’t expect any outrage from those jokers.

What exactly is the role of local MLA in addressing these death traps in open ? Or, his role is not applicable because he doesn’t belong to BJP? I’m trying to understand the double standards of ‘smaaart’ people!!

  • From original r.pai on Theft of Rs 3.50 Lakh from Ishwaramangala Temple

Thank (imaimaginary) God, this theft took place in a sanaathana temple so we can all safely ignore it and get back to modi – bashing. Had it been a church, the habitual troublemakers and their manufactured outrage would have reached a new high!!!

  • From Ramgopal Shastry-BC Road on Got Sajjige Bajil! Vintage Hotel Indra Bhavan finds...

Hotel Indra Bhavan has been my favourite for the last so many decades. The morning coffee with Avalakki-Upittu-and the evening tea with Podi or Dosa are my favourite. When it’s hot ourside the lime juice or rose-milk will quench your thirst. May Indra Bhavan live to make it a century!
