Mangaluru: New Roads but Unfinished! MCC Only Concerned about Motorists and Not Pedestrians

Mangaluru: Among the many dilapidated roads that were transformed into new roads recently, I like to highlight the unfinished work of two roads namely the Jyothi circle to Bunts Hostel Road’ and “Kodialguthu Road’- these roads may be new, but when it comes to the safety of the pedestrians passing through these roads is a nightmare- no proper footpaths, unfinished or no drainage, rocks/mud left behind on the sidewalks etc. This is the same situation all over the city- any job taken up by the MCC is always a unfinished job, right from the road, drainage, to sewage construction.

Although the much needed Bunts Hostel-Jyothi Circle road is in service now, but if you look deeply into the job done- it is indeed a unfinished job. The main road looks good- motorists are happy with it. But what is neglected is providing safety to the pedestrians- I see pedestrians walking on the road instead of footpath- because there is no footpath. Forget about footpath-even if they try to walk a few steps away from the road-that too, they can’t, since left over sand, rocks etc have been piled up after the construction work was done. Does PWD or MCC care about the safety of the pedestrians? I don’t think so. This in an eye opener for the new mayor to act quickly and “Complete” the “Incomplete” job on this Bunts Hostel-Jyothi Circle Road stretch.

Many a times we see vehicles parked on this road- so what good is it to widen this road, when part of it taken for parking by the motorists. Police should crack down on these illegal parking motorists. Also I think having couple of openings in the median is not a good idea- because during rush hours, motorists trying a make a u-turn at these openings result in backing up of other vehicles behind them, thereby creating a traffic jam. At least the traffic authority should close these exits during peak hours, when traffic on both sides is heavy.

It’s been already a month since this new road has been open for the public, but the drainage/footpath has been left unattended. You can see barricades erected at many spots. Why can’t they finish the work once and for all, instead of keeping it pending? I bet they are trying to get a new contractor, so some one else can make some easy money. What a corrupt society are we living in?

About the condition of new Kodialguthu Road :

The same situation is faced on the newly done Kodialguthu Road- funy part of this road is that only 75% of this road is concretized, while the remaining portion is done with interlock bricks. Although the road looks pretty good, but the work is not completely done- no footpaths, construction debris left behind on side of the road, open drainage (a big safety hazard) etc etc.

Ramesh, a resident living on this road said, “With the drainage work not completed, the concerned authorities should have at least barricaded the area to provide safer passage for pedestrians. Unfortunately that is not done. Other day I had met with a minor accident due to the unfinished work and we have raised several complaints to the civic authority but even after complaints no one has rectified the problems. All said and done, much work still remains to be done……
