Mangaluru: The state’s minister of health and family welfare U T Khader was the government’s official delegate to the World Health Organization meet held in Manhattan in New York from Nov 9 to 11.
Taking his turn to speak from the dais, he made a special mention of the challenges faced by his government in taking steps against the tobacco abuse in the state. The banning of ‘gutkha’ and restrictive measures against smoking meant an uphill task.
Yet, he asserted, his government handled the situation well. He said that he was aware that many families would lose their livelihood on account of these measures. But alternative employment opportunities should be created to rehabilitate them, he said.
