Social Activist Holds Unique Protest against Potholes by Swimming and Catching Fish

Udupi: The water logging at the bus-stand attached to Malpe-Teerthalli National Highway near Manipal is creating severe problems for commuters as they find it hard to board the buses during heavy rains.

Social Activist Nithyananda Voladaku took a dig at the Central and State government by swimming in the slushy water logged in the potholes near the Manipal bus-stand. Voalakadu was accompanied by Taranath Bestha who was fishing in the slushy area with a dead fish at the end of the fishing rod. Artist Balakrishna Kodavoor also joined the protest playing the drums.

Later interacting with the Media Volakdu said that the union government had recently upgraded the Theerthahalli-Malpe road into the national highway. Around 116-km stretch between Theerthahalli and Malpe (Udupi district) via Agumbe ghat will be upgraded and converted to the national highway. Manipal is an educational and health hub. Thousands of people commute to Manipal, and ambulances make their way to the hospital. The roads are filled with potholes here which cause trouble for free Movement of vehicles. Patients suffer a lot during their travel to Manipal. The authorities are silent on the issue. A heart patient who was brought to the hospital had breathed his last because of the road conditions. He appealed to the authorities to repair the road from Syndicate Circle to Manipal Hospital.
