Awareness programme on ‘Solid Waste Management at ‘Chithrapura Village’ by St Aloysius Students

Mangaluru: On 26-1-2018, Republic Day, Centre for Social Concern, St Aloysius College, Mangaluru conducted an awareness programme for the General public on Solid waste Management at Chithrapura village in Kulai ward of M.C.C. 90 students from the Depts.of Statistics, Maths and Journalism participated in this programme. Ganesh Hosabettu, political representative of this ward was present on this occasion. Centre for Social Concern Coordinator Mr Sharon along with Chethan, Junior Health Inspector of the ward has taken initiative of organising this programme.

Students were guided by Ms Aruna, Ms Sonal, Ms Felicia, Ms Subhalakshmi, Densil and Ms Poojya, Faculties of the college. Students along with the staff members visited around 200 homes in the community and spoke to the people regarding the importance of managing House hold waste effectively. Students awakened the people about the need of Reduce, Reuse and Recycle of waste. Students were engaged in this session from 9am to 2pm.Students were accepted warmly by the people and they shared their worries and difficulties in managing waste, with the students.

Prior to this session, students visited Pachanady dumping yard and Vermi composting plant and studied about the waste disposal procedure of M.C.C. Students were trained with a module of ‘Problems and need of solid waste management’ in college by Centre for Social Concern staff. Multipurpose workers of MCC under the leadership of Ms Vedhahas taken responsibility of leading students to homes in the community. Centre for Social Concern is a Department of St Aloysius college, which works with the people on various social issues.
