‘Bharateeya Secularvaada Mattu Kannadada Prathikriye!’ State Level Seminar at St Aloysius College {Autonomous} on 23 July 2018 at Fr Eric Mathias Hall

Mangaluru: Addressing the media persons during a press meet held at Mangalore Press Club, Fr Praveen Martis SJ-Principal of St Aloysius College {Autonomous}-Mangaluru said, “The department of Kannada, St Aloysius College will organize a State Level Seminar on ‘Bharateeya Secularvaada Mattu Kannadada Prathikriye’ (Indian Secularism and Kannada Response) on July 23 at Fr Eric Mathais Hall, LCRI Block of St Aloysius College.”

He furthers said, “The modern concept of secularism is facing many challenges and distress in Indian cultural context today. Hence, debate about the secularist theoretical political concepts is more relevant than ever before. The aim of the seminar is to discuss the perspectives of secularism in Gandhi, Ambedkar and Lohiya along with Ananthamoorthy, Lankesh and Devanur’s ideas of secularism in the context of Kannada. This seminar will discuss a vision for India based on secular and democratic values.

Dr Dinesh Nayak-the Programme Coordinator said, “Gandhian thinker and the proponent of Grama Swarajya, Prasanna Heggodu will inaugurate the seminar, Fr Dionysius Vaz SJ-the Rector of St Aloysius institution will preside and Principal of the College, Dr Praveen Martis SJ will be guest of honor. The seminar will have two sessions. Prof Nithyananda B Shetty-the Director DVG Kannada Adhyayana Kendra Tumakuru University, Prof Rajaram Tholpady-Professor of Political Science Mangalore University; Prof Ivan Francis Lobo-Department of Political Science Government First Grade College for Women Puttur; Prof Rajendra Chenny-Retired professor of Kuvempu University; G Rajashekar-social activist and writer Udupi; and Prof B Shivaram Shetty-SVP Kannada Adhyayana Kendra Mangalore University will be the resource persons for the seminar. Four University and college professors and students of 15 colleges from different parts of Karnataka will take part in the seminar”

Ms Chandrakala-PRO of St Aloysius College said, “The final year students of the Department of Journalism will be organizing ‘Swaadhishta’- A healthy food fest on July 22, Sunday at the lower floor of City Centre Mall from 4PM. The event will feature an assortment of healthy food items on sale such as nutritional ladoos, sandwiches, date balls, guava juice, fruit salad and the likes. All proceeds from the day will be donated to charity via the Center for Social Concern of St Aloysius Institutions. The PR event is an earnest attempt at spreading awareness about eating healthy among the general public of Mangaluru. It will also aim to break the misconception that ‘healthy can’t be tasty’. Alongside the food items, the recipes will also be displayed in an effort to explain to the public how it isn’t a hard task to eat and live a healthy lifestyle.”. Dr Saraswathi-the HOD of Kannada Dept also briefed about the Kannada Seminar.

About St Aloysius College:

St Aloysius College is a one hundred and thirty eight year old institution that has trained thousands of men and women in various fields, and presented them to the nation. About the Department of Journalism

The Department of Journalism of St Aloysius College was established in 1997. It aims to make students adept at filmmaking, newspaper making, radio programs, and television bulletins which help them learn allied subjects like writing for media, media management, communication etc. in a better way. It recognizes media as a potent weapon which can be used to fuel the growth and all-round development of society, if wielded correctly. In that regard, the Department undertakes various initiatives to groom its students and make them ethically and morally abiding journalists and media persons.

About the Centre for Social Concern

In order to create a sense of social responsibility among students, St Aloysius Institutions has embarked on an innovative centre to address social issues. The Centre for Social Concern, active for the last eight years, has taken leaps and bounds in this regard, and has been actively working for and with the marginalized community, to create awareness and development. It organizes various activities and programs in eight communities and the student body, catalyze social change. It also encourages volunteers to work with the needy. The Centre has identified and adopted villages in Karnataka, and is engaged in providing necessary aid to them.
