DCIB Police Raid Godown and Arrest Five Persons Involved in Smuggling Ration Rice in Kundapur

Kundapur: In a massive crackdown on a gang of ration rice smugglers, the Udupi DCIB police have seized 55 tons of ration rice and arrested five persons on Thursday evening at Koteshwar, Kundapur.

The arrested have been identified as Ismail, Mustafa Toufeeq, Ubaidulla, Mohammed and Niyas. All the five are residents of Moodugopadi and Kerala.

The rice was being stocked and supplied to Kerala from a godown adjacent to a rice polishing unit operating out of the same premises near Koteshwar.

Acting on a specific tip-off, the team led by Manjappa DCIB Inspector raided the godown and seized 55 tons of rice and arrested five persons. The police have also seized a truck and three cars used by the gang to smuggle the rice. In addition, the police have seized Rs 2.5 lakh cash from the accused.

According to the DCIB police, the accused used to procure PDS rice from the locals and stockpile it to be polished and sent across to Kerala and sell it at a higher price.

The case has been transferred to the Kundapur Police station for further investigation.
