DGP dalliance: Never before in history did K’taka witness such shameful situation, says BJP
Bengaluru: Coming down heavily on the Karnataka government over the alleged case of DGP K. Ramachandra Rao romancing a woman in his office while in uniform, the BJP stated on Tuesday that never before in the state’s history has such a shameful situation involving a senior cop been witnessed.
It may be recalled that in a major embarrassment to the Karnataka Police Department, purported videos showing objectionable behaviour by jailed actress Ranya Rao’s stepfather and Karnataka DGP K. Ramachandra Rao with a woman inside his office while in uniform went viral on Monday.
Following the surfacing of the alleged sex videos purportedly showing DGP K. Ramachandra Rao romancing with a woman at his office, the government suspended him pending enquiry. The senior IPS officer has also been directed not to leave headquarters without the permission of the state government.
The Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly, R. Ashoka, made a statement in this regard on Tuesday, stating, “The police department has turned into centres of immorality and extortion under the Congress government. Never before in Karnataka’s history has the state witnessed such a shameful situation.”
“The police department, which is meant to protect the lives, property and dignity of the people, is today making headlines not for arresting criminals, but for incidents where officers themselves have violated the law and become objects of public ridicule,” he said.
Serious allegations that a senior police officer was involved in obscene acts inside his office, with related videos going viral, stand as living proof of the moral degeneration of the police departmen. This is not merely an individual officer’s personal misconduct, but a reflection of the moral collapse of the entire police system, Ashoka slammed.
Despite several grave allegations against an officer known to be part of the Home Minister’s close circle, the absence of any strict action naturally raises suspicion over whether the government is indirectly shielding such behaviour, he alleged.
It is disgusting that the government remains silent even as the dignity of a disciplined force is being dragged through the mud in public, he slammed.
On one side, there is indiscipline and moral decay within the police department; on the other, criminals are operating with impunity. If money can be looted right under the nose of the Police Commissioner’s office, what assurance of safety remains for the common citizen? Ashoka questioned.
Today, the drug network has spread even to villages. Despite the open sale of ganja and narcotic substances around schools and colleges, the police department has completely failed to control the menace. Every question is met with stock responses such as “the investigation is ongoing” or “I am not aware”, he said.
It is a matter of shame that police from other states have to step in to crack drug rackets in Karnataka. If this situation continues, an entire generation in the state is bound to fall victim to drug addiction, he said.
“Home Minister G. Parameshwara, your silence even as officers in your department indulge in indecent acts within their offices clearly reflects your lack of control over the department. If you have no interest or grip over the Home Department, do you have any moral right to continue occupying that chair?” Ashoka criticised.
If women, youth and senior citizens today feel unsafe on the streets, it is solely due to the incompetent administration of the Congress government in Karnataka, he said.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, take moral responsibility for the failure of the Home Department and seek the resignation of the incompetent Home Minister, he demanded.
Former CM D.V. Sadananda Gowda stated that the state home department has weakened. The Intelligence is doing nothing. How could the Intelligence not know about this case involving such a senior IPS officer? The incident had happened at the office of the IPS officer. There is no morality for the Home Minister to continue and it is also impossible for such a Home Minister to manage the law and order in the state. Knowing all this, it is not correct for the Home Minister G. Parameshwara to continue in this position, he added.
BJP MLC C.T. Ravi stated, it is an incident which has made the state police department bow its head in shame. A comprehensive investigation must be conducted led by a sitting woman judge. The officer is claiming that he is implicated with AI technology. That also must be probed. If the allegations are proved, harsh punishment should be given to him. If the police officers themselves behave in this fashion, how can they deliver justice to people? he asked.
