DK Congress Observes Death Anniversary of Jawaharlal Nehru, Reiterates Nehru’s Ideology of Socialistic and Secular Republic

Mangaluru: The District Congress Committee observed the 55th death anniversary of India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru at the DCC Office, Mallikatta here, on May 27.

The Congress leaders offered floral tribute to the portrait of Jawaharlal Nehru.

Addressing the gathering former minister Ramanath Rai said, “Everyone is aware of this country’s freedom struggle. The main objective of India’s freedom fighters was to make this country free from British rule. None of our freedom fighters had selfish ambitions of becoming ministers after India’s independence. All of us must understand that Jawaharlal Nehru never fought for India’s freedom with the intention of becoming the Prime Minister. I want to tell all the Congress workers that Nehru’s reputation and his values are in danger today. The people who speak ill of Nehru are the same ones who never participated in India’s freedom struggle and instead collaborated with the British. Speaking ill of our freedom fighters like Gandhiji and Nehru is akin to betraying this country.”

Ramanath Rai further said, “Jawaharlal Nehru spent many years in jail for the purpose of India’s independence. His father – Motilal Nehru donated his ancestral home for the country. Whoever insults our freedom fighters (who went to jail for this country), they are traitors of India. Nehru said that we are a Sovereign, Socialistic, and Secular Republic. The Congress party still remains committed to this ideology.”

Speaking on the occasion, MLC and Parliamentary Secretary Ivan D’Souza said, “This country’s ideology of secularism comes from Nehru. Pandit Nehru’s work as Prime Minister made Indians proud of him and this country. After Independence, India was in a very bad state. It was Nehru who worked for the development of this country and brought forth several schemes that changed the country. His projects strengthened India’s Science and Technology Ministry, Education Ministry, Defence Ministry, and the Foreign Affairs Ministry. His historic foreign policy of non-alignment saved India from being trapped in the Cold War between America and Russia.”

District Youth Congress President Mithun Rai speaking on the occasion said, “Pandit Nehru was loved by all the people, especially children. That is why we celebrate his birthday on November 14th as Children’s Day. All of us must band together and protect the values that Nehru stood for.”

District Congress President Harish Kumar said, “Even though it is Pandit Nehru’s 55th death anniversary, his concerns are still alive. India’s history has witnessed such great leaders. However, there are also some people who want to ruin this country’s history. These people consider Gandhiji’s assassin to be a ‘Deshbhakt’ or patriot. I cannot believe that such people have been elected to Parliament. Today, they issue death threats to parliamentary candidates who lost the elections. All of them believe in the same ideology that ultimately killed Gandhiji.”

District Congress Committee members Ibrahim Kodijal, Navin D’Souza, Ashraf, Ganesh Poojary, and others were also present.
