Karkala: Two Young Men Drown While Swimming in Suvarna River
Karkala: Two young men who had gone swimming with their friends drowned in the Suvarna River at Hermunde in Hirgana village of Karkala taluk on Tuesday.
The deceased have been identified as Bharath Poojary, 29, and Harshan Acharya, 23, both residents of Hirgana village.
As they had a holiday from work, the five friends reportedly walked about two kilometres along a difficult route via Mangilaru to reach the Suvarna River. During the outing, Bharath and Harshan ventured into a deep section of the river and are believed to have drowned.
After being alerted about the incident, fire and rescue personnel walked nearly three kilometres to reach the spot. With the assistance of local residents, a rescue operation lasting more than three hours was carried out, following which the bodies of both victims were recovered.
The operation was conducted under the leadership of Station Officer Sanjeeva Devadiga.
Bharath worked as a painter and was the sole breadwinner for his family. He had been constructing his own house, and the construction had reached the slab stage. The family was reportedly looking forward to performing the housewarming ceremony soon. His untimely death has left the family devastated.
