Mangaluru: The National Students Union of India, DK Unit (NSUI) staged a protest against the suicide of research scholar Rohit Vemula in Hyderbad, near the old clock tower here, on January 22.

Addressing the protesters president of the District Youth congress Mithun Rai said that Hyderabad University research scholar Rohit Vemula committed suicide after he was expelled from the University and barred access into the campus. ABVP along with BJP and Sangh Parivar are discriminating the Dalits and the poor students in the name of caste and religion. The NSUI condemns the actions of ABVP which has led Rohit Vemula to commit suicide.

Mithun further said that the ABVP organization is trying to divide the students based on caste and religion. Behind Rohit Vemula’s suicide case there is conspiracy of the ABVP. He demanded Smiriti Irani and Bandaru Dattatreya’s resignation in Rohit suicide case. He also demanded to hand over the case to the CBI. The harassment by ABVP is the main reason and they are directly responsible for Rohit’s suicide.

While concluding Mithun said that if the case will not be handed over to CBI, NSUI will intensify their protest and they call for a all college bundh in the district.

District President of NSUI Ashith Pereira said, “ABVP along with BJP is trying to divide the students in the name of caste in the campus which is dangerous for students to pursue their education. By doing so they are guiding the students in the wrong direction. Most of the students who belong to the Dalit and backward community in the campus have a difficult time while pursuing education because of the Sangh Parivar and ABVP. Instead of dividing the students based on caste they should unite them. Whoever is trying to divide the students based on caste and religion should be punished severely.

He also said that Rohit has sacrificed his life so that justice will be done to other students who are the victims of castism. If Rohit suicide case will not be handed over to CBI, NSUI will intensify their protest in the coming days, he said.

Members of NSUI from various colleges were also present.
