Udupi: “Sooryanarayan Bhat was suffering from mental illness which led to the killing of his wife and two children before committing suicide at Shankernarayana near Kundapur”, said Nisha James SP Udupi District.

Speaking to Mangalorean.com on November 28, SP Nisha James said that Sooryanarayan Bhat was suffering from mental illness and was under treatment for many years. He used to fight with his wife very often. According to the information from the locals the department has found that mental illness led Sooryanaryan Bhat to take this extreme step.

Four members of a family from Belve village in Kundapur taluk were found dead on Wednesday night. The bodies of Sooryanaryan Bhat’s wife Manasa (45) and two sons – Sudheendra (14) and Sudesh (8) were found lying on the floor, while Sooryanarayana Bhat (50), was found hanging to the ceiling.

Sooryanarayana’s younger brother Prakash who works as a Yakshagana Bhagavata grew suspicious on Wednesday night when the lights were not on at his brother’s house and was shocked when he came to know about the incident.

Sooryanarayan had killed his wife and children by hitting them with lethal objects and later committed suicide by hanging.
