Panambur Police Thwart Suicide Attempt, Saving Lives of Father and Daughter

Mangaluru: In a swift and decisive operation, the Panambur Police successfully rescued a 35-year-old man and his four-year-old daughter on Monday night, preventing a tragic suicide attempt. Rajesh alias Santu, a resident of Shantinagar, Kavoor, allegedly attempted to end his life and that of his daughter by jumping into the sea following a domestic dispute.

The incident unfolded after Rajesh reportedly sent a distressing WhatsApp video to his contacts. The video, capturing the sound of crashing waves, featured Rajesh’s voice stating, “Let’s die, my dear… your mother is not right,” as he seemingly approached the sea with his daughter. The disturbing nature of the video led to its rapid dissemination across social media platforms, eventually alerting the Panambur Police to the imminent danger.

Inspector Mohammed Saleem immediately mobilized his team, initiating a comprehensive analysis of the video to ascertain the location. Law enforcement officials suspected the location to be in the vicinity of Tannirbhavi Beach. Concurrently, the Cyber Cell was engaged to trace Rajesh’s mobile phone signal, which placed him in the Shantinagar area of Kavoor.

PSI Fakirappa Sharanappa and Constable Rakesh were dispatched to the location, arriving within a mere ten minutes. Upon finding the residence locked from the inside, the officers acted swiftly, forcibly opening the door and rescuing Rajesh and his daughter. Authorities affirmed that the timing of their intervention was critical, emphasizing that even a slight delay could have resulted in a fatal outcome.

“The video only showed the sea and the child’s faint voice crying, ‘Don’t die, Appa.’ It sent chills down our spines. After three hours of effort, saving their lives was the most rewarding moment,” stated Inspector Mohammed Saleem, highlighting the emotional impact of the rescue.

Following the rescue, the police summoned Rajesh and his wife to the Kavoor station for counseling. During the session, the wife reportedly expressed her desire for a divorce and requested custody of their daughter, indicating an unwillingness to reconcile. After advising both parties, the police facilitated their peaceful return home.

Law enforcement officials clarified that while the act would have constituted attempted suicide under the former Indian Penal Code (IPC), Section 309, which criminalized the act, has been repealed under the newly enacted Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Consequently, no formal case was registered in connection with the incident.

The prompt response and compassionate approach demonstrated by the Panambur Police have garnered widespread commendation, including accolades from Police Commissioner Sudhir Reddy and members of the public.
